Description
UNITED sTATEs PATENT oEEioE.
JOSEPH YVETHERILL, OF MANCHESTER, CONNECTICUT.
QUILTING-FRAME.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 23,631, dated .April 12, 1859.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JosErH VETHERILL, of Manchester, county of Hartford, and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Quilt- Frames; and I do hereby declare that the same is described and represented in the following specification and drawings, and to enable others skilled in the art to make and use my improvement I will proceed to describe the construction and operation, referring to the drawings, in which the same letters indicate like parts in each of the figures.
In the accompanying drawings is shown in one view, the manner of its construction and the mode of operation.
A, is the frame.
B, is the girt which holds the frame together.
C, D, E, are the winding rolls, which may be secured to the frame by having the tenen, etc. pass through and a pin inserted, or by having a groove. a short distance from the shoulder, and a key inserted so as to strike into the groove through the frame, thus allowing the rolls to turn freely and still be held in place.
E are arms secured at one side of the frame and nearly in a line of the center of the roll c, extending' to the opposite side to receive the ends of the roll E.
Gr, are pawls, or button fastenings, which catch into the notches H, to hold or prevent the rolls from turning.
The upper lining I, is first wound up around the roll E. The lower lining J, is wound up around the 4roll D. Then the two edges are brought together and secured to the roll C. The two rolls E, D, are then turned up taut as desirable. The roll E may be lifted and the wedding arranged in the desired order from time to time during the progress of the quilting and the roll dropped back to its place, and is now ready for quilting, which may now progress over the surface between the rolls C, E. Vhen accomplished the rolls E, D, may be relaxed and that portion which is quilted may be wound up on the roll C, and the rolls E, D, again tightened, and the wadding arranged as before, and the quilting again progress, and continue in the same manner until completed.
The advantage thus derived over others now in use are, much less room is occupied. The wadding can be more easily and satisfactorily arranged, and the quilting more easily performed, and at the same time can be easily taken down and packed in small compass for laying away.
I believe I have thus fully set forth my improvement, in its construction and operation.` The nature, and utility, of the invention I think cannot fail to be fully and clearly understood therefrom.
I claim- T he employment of the rolls C, D, E, in combination with the arms F pawls G, notches H, so that the upper roll E may be lifted when desired, arranged in the manner as and for the purpose described.
JOSEPH VETHERILL.
Titnesses S. J. IVILDER, JEREMY IV. BLIss.
