PECIFICATION forming. part of Letters Patent No, 327,224-, dated September 29, 3.885.
Application tiled Augustl, i885.'
To all whom t may concern:
Beit known that I, ROBERT WT. BIP/nrs, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Montclair, in the county of Essexand State oi' New Jersey, have inventedY certain new and useful Improveinentsin,Iaper Boxes, of which the following isa specification.
My invention relates to an improvementin boxes, the object of the same being to so con-y struct a box that the ends thereof may be easily and readily folded, and at the same time effectually prevent the escape or sifting i out of the .contents thereof.
W ith this endin View niyinvention consists in certain novel features of construction, as will b e hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanyingl drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved box, one end thereof being shown entirely open and the other end closed. Fig. 2 is a similar view thereof, showing the ends partially closed; and Figs. 3 and 4 are modifications. f,
Referring to "the drawings, A' represents the body of the box, which in this instance is rectangular in outline, being sealed at its vertical sides, leaving the ends open for the insertion or withdrawal for whatever it may be desired to packor ship inthe box. Upon opposite sides of the box are formed the flaps B F, respectively, each of which is folded on the lines M N and O P,--,respectively, and the other two sides of the box are cut'to form flaps or curbs B', whichare folded on the lines O Q and I? Q, M Q and N Q, thereby forming three daps, (lettered D G 0,) the top of the curb or iiap being at the apex Q of the iiap G. Theflaps B F are extended, forming the lips A E, as clearly shown in Fig.v 1 of' the drawings. The ends of the box may be folded, according to my invention, by first 'v folding inward the flap B, the fold being on the lines M N, M Q, N Q, M K, and N L, said Hap when thus folded lying fiat upon the contents of the box, and the extended portion yor lip -A resting against the flap F, said lip being folded on the line K L. After the flap B has been folded, as described, the flaps or curbs B are folded inward on the' lines O Q (Model 4l and I Q, M O and N l, shown, which has the effect of drawing the flap F dovsf'nward toward the end of the box, whereupon the extended portion or lip lil is turned down upon the side of the bex A', and the whole pressed compactly together, so as to form a firm solid end, as indicated in Fig. l.
Previous to folding the box, as above described, glue or other desired adhesive substance is applied to the inner sides of the flaps F and the lips A E, and also upon the inner sides of the curbs B', whereby the several partsafter the box has been folded, will be permanently held in their proper relative positions. Instead, however, of using any adhesive substance, I may lengthen the lip H,
as shown in Fig. .3 of the drawings, and after lapsed or flattened out for shipment, and when the box is filled and the flaps folded to close the same all danger of the material sifting through it is entirely overcome, and when the boxes are constructed as shown in Figs. 3 and 4 either end thereof may be opened and closed at will.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, anddesire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A bex formed on its opposite sides with fiaps BF, lipA, and curbs B', the flaps B F being bent to fold on the lines M N and O I), respectively, and the curbs on the lines O Q, M Q, and M O and I Q, N Q, and N P, the whole being' arrangedto close substantially in the manner and for the purpose set forth.
2; A box forlnedon its opposite sides with the flaps B F and icurbs B', the flaps B F be ing bent to fold con the lines M N and O P, and the curbs on the linesOQ, MQ, and M 0 and 1 Q, N Q, :mdN P, said flaps being formed l Signed at Montclair, in the county of Essex on their ends with lips AIE. which are bent and State of New Jersey, this 13th day of xo vto fold on thelines I J and K L, whereby the August, AZ D. 1885. lip A willresta against the ap F and the latl 5 ter rest. on the upper face of the iiap B, theQ `curbs being bent'inwardly between said flaps B and F, substantially as and the purpose de scribed. v
