  • Our invention relates to cartons of the type produced by folding heavy paper or card-board to form a package, or receptacle; and our primary object is to provide a form of carton which can be automatically folded and sealed, which shall be of the 'simplest formation consistent with proper results, and in which will be employed the minimum amount of stock, or material.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, FREDERICK H. MER- RELL and WILLIAM S. AMInoN, citizens of the United States, and residents of Wanwatosa and Milwaukee, respectively, in the county of Milwaukee and State of Wisconsi-n, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Paper Cartons; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
Our invention relates to cartons of the type produced by folding heavy paper or card-board to form a package, or receptacle; and our primary object is to provide a form of carton which can be automatically folded and sealed, which shall be of the 'simplest formation consistent with proper results, and in which will be employed the minimum amount of stock, or material. Such a carton is well adapted to the purpose of incasing for shipment prcparatorily wrapped prints of butter, enabling-the same to be securely packaged at a minimum of expense. Other-uses for the invention will suggest themselves.
Machines for wrapping cakes or prints of butterare now in practlcal use, and our present invention in cartons lends itself admirably to the cheap and effective cartoningof the wrapped butter-prints,-or other prismatic bodies, besides economizing in'the cost of cartons.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying .drawings, in which- Figure 1 represents a plan view of a carton-blank shaped, cut and scored in accordance with our invention; Fig. 2, a perspective view illustrating the folds of the carton; Fig. 3, a perspective view showing the carton as it appears before the top and outer end flaps are folded and cemented on the body of the carton; and Fig.4, a perspective view of the carton in its closedand sealed condition.
The carton is of integralformation, being preferably formed from a carton-blank A of the general rectangular outline shown in-Fig. l, and having the cuts or slits there shown in heavy lines and the scorings or creases there shown in dotted lines.
The carton comprises a rectangular bottom-section 1; side- sections 2 and 3 of the same length as the bottom-section; a topsection 4 of the same size as the bottomsection; end-sections 5 of the same width as the bottom-section; end-embracing sealingflaps 6 carried by the end-portions of the top section 4; infolding, rectangular tucksections 7 at the corners of the bottom section 1 and each united along two of its edges to an end-section and side-section, each tuck-section 7 foldable-on the diagonal scoring-line 8 and thus comprising two triangular sections 7 and 7"; and a narrow, or rudimentary, sealing-flap 9 carried by the upper or free longitudinal edge-portion of the front side-section 3. v
The blank A ispreferably'rectangular, but at one edge is cutaway'adjacent the sections 7-, as indicated at 10, thus leaving the centrally disposed strip 9, which is adapted to serve as a foundation sealingflap, when bent to the position shownin Fig. 3. The blank is scored or creased along the junction'lines between its sections as indicated by the dotted lines, except that at the junction lines between the end-embracing flaps 6 and the sections 7 the blank is'provided with the slits, or cuts, 11, which 'thus extend parallel witlrthe flap 9.'

Where a wrapped butter-print, for instance, is to be inclosed, the folding may be effected about the same, till the carton assumes about the condition shown in Fig. 3, when a mucilagecoating, or adhesive coating, 12, may be applied to the inner marginal surfaces at the free edges of the top-section 4 and end-embracing flaps 6, after which the top-section may be pressed down on the body of the package and themembers 6 turned down and pressed against the outer surfaces of the end-section's, whereupon the adhesive, will unite the member 4-to the foundation sealing-flap 9 and will unite the free edge-portions of the members 6 to the end-sections 5, thus completely sealing the carton. The sequence of the folding operations may be varied, however.
, It is observed that Fig. 2 81mm apartially unfolded condition of the. carton-body, rather than anystep in the folding operaa minimum the stock necessary for a secure package, and enables comparatively simple mechanisms to be employed in the folding and sealing operations.
The foregoing detailed description has been given for clearness of understanding and no unnecessary limitation of the claim is to 'be understood therefrom.
What we regard as new, and secure by Letters Patent, is-
A carton ofintegral formation and having unbroken external faces, comprising a bottom-section, side-sections and end-sections, with infolded tuck-sections at the corners of the bottom-section and each having edges joined to the said end-sections and side-sections, an inturned rudimentary sealing-flap carried by the upper edge-portion desire to of one of said side-sections and lying parallel with said bottom-section, the blank being cut away at the ends of said rudimentary sealing-flap, a top-section carried by the upper' edge of the other side-section and having its free longitudinal edge-portion overlying and gummed to said rudimentary sealing-fiap, and end-embracing sealing-- flaps carried by the end-portions of said topsection and gummed to the lower outer surfaces of said end-sections, said end-embracing flaps being of a length equal to the height substantially of the folded structure. In testimony that we claim the foregoing we have hereunto set our hands at Milwaukee in the county of Milwaukee and-State of Wisconsin in the presence of two witnesses.
