This invention relates to an improved package and method of manufacturing same.
A main object of my invention is to take a tubular package blank having four side walls or a similarly shaped open top ended package for instance a paper bag or the like and closing an end of the same by folding the ends of two opposite side walls inwards so that two opposite side flaps are obtained and so that the edges of the folded parts extend alongside from the end of one side flap to the end of the opposite side flap and applying adhesively a sheet to the outer face of the folded parts for the purpose of covering said edges with the view of obtaining a sealing of said end preventing air or moisture from gaining access to contents which aresupplied to the package or which are to be supplied to said package.
A further object of my invention is to adhesively apply a sheet so that it extends from the end of one of the side flaps to the end of the opposite side flap to cover said edges substantially with the view of preventing leakage along folds extending from a corner of the package to the ends of the side flaps.
Still a further object of my invention is to adhesively apply a sheet to cover said edges to such an extent that it ends at the folds that are obtained when the side flaps are folded inwardly upon the folded down wall ends substantially with the view of preventing leakage from the interior of the package along said folds.
Further objects of my invention is the provision of a package and method of manufacturing same as will be in part obvious and in part pointed out hereinafter.
My invention accordingly consists in the several steps and in the features of construction, conibinations of elements and arrangement of parts which will be exemplified in the method hereinafter disclosed and the construction hereinafter set forth, and the scope of the application of each will be indicated in the following claims.

Referring now more specifically to the drawing the top end of the tubular body I preferably although not necessarily having its bottom end sealed is partly sealed as shown in Fig. l by folding the ends 2 of two side walls inwards so that two opposite side flaps 4 extending from the two other side walls of the tube are obtained, and so that edges 3 of said inwardly folded parts extend alongside from the end of one side flap 4 to the end of the opposite side flap leaving a compartment l5 between said edges. After having executed said folding a sheet or strip 5 is adhesively applied to the outer face of the ends 2 upon the edges 3 so that it will extend from the end of one of the side flaps 4 to the end of the opposite side flap in this case completely covering the edges 3 and the compartment 15 formed between them. After thus having applied the sheet 5 the side flaps 4 are folded inwards into superposed relation as shown in Fig. 2 thereby doubling the sheet 5 along folds rectilinearly with the folds 6 obtained on folding the flaps 4. As the lower face of the sheet 5 is pasted leakage is prevented as well out of the folds 6 as at the flap ends at 1. Conveniently a piece of carton l2 or the like is inserted into the tubular body prior to the folding operation so that it constitutes a support for the ends 2.
If desired the flaps 4 with part of the sheet 5 applied thereto may be folded down upon the side walls 8 of the tubular body as shown in Fig. 3, and the pasted sheet 5 will secure complete tightness as well along the edges as at the ends of the side flaps.
Even though it may occur that the edges 3 overlap partly it will be most convenient not to provide overlapping folding at the ends of the side flaps 4 but the pasted sheet 5 should preferably be applied directly to each edge 3 at the flap ends. In such case a package of the kind illustrated in Figs. 4 and 5 may be employed. Then the top ends of the opposite side walls 8 of the tubular body are given the shape shown in Fig. 4 by providing their edges with triangular slits l0 leaving an intermediate rectangular skirt 9 forming an extension of the side wall 8. The obliquely extending edges ll of the slits run apart towards the side flap ends when the open end of the tubular body is folded as shown in Fig. 5. ,The side flaps 4 of this embodiment of the invention may be folded inwards upon the parts 2 in the same manner as indicated in Fig. 2 or they may be folded down upon adjacent side walls 8 as indicated in Fig. 3.
The embodiment illustrated in Fig. 6 is particularly developed with the view of preventing leakage along the folds 6. Such leakage will arise on account of the primarily folded parts 2 having a tendency of projecting outwards on folding the side flaps 4 upon the intermediate primarily folded parts 2 of the side walls of the tubular body and thereby providing channels extending from the corners of the sealed package to the edges 3. For the purpose of removing this inconvenience a comparatively thick sheet l3 of paper, carton or the like is applied to the compartment lying between the folds 6 its edges extending along said folds. Before applying the sheet I3 the compartment of the partly sealed end of the tubular body and side flaps 4 limited by dash and dot lines M as indicated in Fig. 6 is covered with an adhesive. After the sheet l3 having been applied the side flaps 4 are folded inwards in the same manner as indicated in Fig. 2.
It will be apparent that various changes may be made in the details of the construction and method described without departing from the spirit of my invention as set up in the following claims. Thus the sheet or strip 5 may be replaced by a sheet that covers completely the parts 2 and the side flaps 4 or it may occur that only said flaps are covered with sheets or strips. .Sheet of any material else than paper or carton may be employed. The construction and method according to this invention may be applied not only to the sealing of packages having a sealed bottom end but they may equally well refer to the sealing of said bottom end especially in case the container is adapted for the storage of moist material.
I claim:-
1. A bag comprising four side walls constituting a rectangular tubular body having a sealed end, said end including two oppositely disposed inwardly turned parts and a side flap which constitutes an extension of a bag wall and is bent down along a fold line that extends from one bag corner to another bag corner, a portion of said flap being left exposed between said inwardly turned parts, and a separate strip adhesively applied to said exposed portion of the flap and to said inwardly turned parts so as to cover the same adhesively and be bent along sections of said fold line formed on both of said inwardly turned parts.
2. A bag comprising four side walls constituting a rectangular tubular body having a sealed end, said end including two oppositely disposed inwardly turned parts and a side flap which constitutes an extension of a bag wall and is bent down along a fold line that extends from one bag corner to another bag corner, a portion of said flap being left exposed between said inwardly turned parts, and a separate strip adhesively applied to said exposed portion of the flap and to said inwardly turned parts so as to cover the same adhesively and be bent along sections of said fold line formed on both of said inwardly turned parts and extending right on to said portion.
3. A bag comprising four side walls constituting a rectangular tubular body having a sealed end, said end including two oppositely disposed inwardly turned parts and a side flap which constitutes an extension of a bag wall and is bent down upon said inwardly turned parts along a fold line that extends from one bag corner to another bag corner, a portion of said flap being left exposed between said inwardly turned parts, and a separate strip adhesively applied to 'said exposed portion of the flap and to said inwardly turned parts so as to cover the same adhesively and be bent along sections of said fold line formed on both of said inwardly turned parts.
4. A bag comprising four side walls constituting a rectangular tubular body having a sealed end, said end including two oppositely disposed inwardly turned parts and a side flap which constitutes an extension of a bag wall and is bent down upon said bag wall along a fold line that extends from one bag corner to another bag corner, a portion of said flap being left exposed between said inwardly turned parts, and a separate strip adhesively applied to said exposed portion of the flap and to said inwardly turned-parts so as to cover the same adhesively and be bent along sections of said fold line formed on both of said inwardly turned parts.
5. A bag comprising four side walls constituting a rectangular tubular body having a sealed end, said end including two oppositely disposed inwardly turned parts and a side flap which constitutes an extension of a bag wall and is bent down along a fold line that extends from one bag corner to another bag corner, a portion of said flap being left exposed between said inwardly turned parts, and a separate strip adhesively applied to said exposed portion of the flap and to said inwardly turned parts so as to cover the same adhesively and be bent along sections of said fold line formed on both of said inwardly turned parts and extend beyond the end of said side flap.
6. A bag comprising four side walls constituting a rectangular tubular body having a sealed end, said end including two oppositely disposed inwardly turned parts and two side flaps constituting extensions of two oppositely disposed bag walls and being bent down along fold lines extending from one bag corner to another bag corner, exposed portions being left on said flaps between said inwardly turned parts, and a sepa rate strip adhesively applied-to said exposed portions and to said inwardly turned parts so as to cover adhesively sections of said fold lines formed on both of said inwardly turned parts said strip extending from the one side flap to the other.
7. A bag comprising four side walls constituting a rectangular tubular body having a sealed end, said end including two oppositely disposed inwardly turned parts and a side flap which constitutes an extension of a bag wall, said inwardly turned parts leaving an intermediary triangularly shaped portion of said flap exposed, said flap being bent down along a fold line that extends from one bag corner to another bag corner, and a separate strip adhesively applied to said inwardly turned part and said triangular exposed portion.
8. A bag comprising four side walls constituting a rectangular tubular body having a sealed end, said end including two oppositely disposed inwardly turned parts and two side flaps constituting extensions of two oppositely disposed bag walls and being bent down along fold lines extending from one bag corner to another bag corner, edges of said inwardly turned parts being spaced apart and extending each from the end of the one side flap to the end of the other side flap, and one separate strip adhesively applied to both of said edges over their full length.
9. A method of manufacturing bags comprising a rectangular tubular body which includes sealing an end of said body by turning inwardly two oppositely disposed parts so that two opposite side flaps are obtained which constitute extensions of two oppositely disposed bag walls and so that edges of said parts are spaced apart, adhesively applying a strip to the portion of said side flaps lying between said inwardly turned parts as well as to the spaced edges of said parts and to sections of fold lines formed on both of said inwardly turned parts when bending down said side flaps, and extending from one bag corner to another bag corner.
10. A method of manufacturing bags comprising a rectangular tubular body which includes sealing an end of said body by turning inwardly two oppositely disposed parts so that two opposite side fiaps are obtained which constitute extensions of two oppositely disposed bag walls and so that edges of said parts are spaced apart, adhesively applying a strip to extend beyond said side flaps and cover the area of said side flaps lying between said inwardly turned parts, and thereafter bending down said flaps along fold lines extending from one bag corner to another bag corner.
11. A method of manufacturing bags comprising a rectangular tubular body which includes sealing an end of said body by turning inwardly two oppositely disposed parts so that two opposite side flaps are obtained which constitute extensions of two oppositely disposed bag walls and sothat edges of said parts are spaced apart, ad-
hesively applying a strip to the portion of said side flaps lying between said inwardly turned parts as well as to the spaced edges of said parts and thereafter bending down said flaps along fold lines extending from .one bag corner to another bag corner on folding said strip along the same fold lines.

A method of manufacturing bags comprising a rectangular tubular body which includes sealing an end of said body by turning inwardly two oppositely disposed parts so that two opposite side flaps are obtained which constitute extensions of two oppositely disposed bag walls and so that edges of said parts are spaced apart, adhesively applying a strip to the portion of said side flaps lying between said inwardly turned parts as well as to the spaced edges of said parts and thereafter bending down said flaps towards one another along fold lines extending from one bag corner to another bag corner on folding said strip along the same fold lines.
13. A method of manufacturing bags comprising a rectangular tubular body which includes sealing an end of said body by turning inwardly two oppositely disposed parts so that two opposite side flaps are obtained which constitute extensions of two oppositely disposed bag walls and so that edges of said parts are spaced apart, adhesively applying a strip to the portion of said side flaps lying between said inwardly turned parts as well as to the spaced edges of said parts and thereafter bending down said flaps upon said oppositely disposed bag walls along fold lines extending from one bag corner to another bag corner on folding said strip along the same fold lines.
14. A bag comprising four side walls constitut ing a rectangular tubular body having a sealed end, said end including two oppositely disposed inwardly turned parts and a side flap which constitutes an extension of a bag wall and is bent down along a fold line that extends from one bag corner to another bag corner, a portion of said flap being left exposed between said inwardly turned parts, and a separate strip adhesively applied to said exposed portion of the flap and to said inwardly turned parts so as to cover the same adhesively and be bent along sections of said fold line formed on both of said inwardly turned parts, said side flap having a skirt constituting an extension of said exposed portion.
