UNITED STATES THADDEUS C. BEACH, OF DETROIT,
MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOR TO HANNAH BEACH, OF SAME PLACE.
REMOVABLE TABLE-LEG.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 327,221, dated September 29, 1885.
Application filed February 18, 1885.
To otZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THADDEUs C. BEACH, of Detroit, in the county of Wayne and State of Michigan, have invented new and useful Improvements in Removable Table-Legs; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in removable table-legs; and the invention consists in the peculiar arrangement and construction of sockets in the corner-posts of a table, which operate in connection with screws to removably secure the legs to the table, all as more fully hereinafter set forth.
In the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specication, Figure l is a vertical central section through the corner of a table provided with my improvement. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section on line y y in Fig. l. Fig. 3 is a detached perspective of the socketpiece. Fig. 4 is a detached perspective of one corner of the table, looking at it from the inside, and showing it prepared to receive the socket-piece. Fig. 5 is a section similar to Fig. 1,showing the leg only partially secured to the table.
A is a table of the ordinary description, provided with the corner-posts B, which, in the ordinary table, form the upper ends of the legs in one piece, but which now have the legs C removably secured thereto in the following manner:
Dis a metal socket-piece secured in a suitable recess in the corner-post by means of the screws a, or in any other suitable manner.
E is a relatively large wood-screw, provided with a rectangular head, b. This screw is only partly secured in the top of the leg, and partly projects, as shown. The socket formed in the socket-piece is of such nature that the screw E, with its head b, can be introduced and secured into it in the following manner: first, by introducing the screw with its head into the bottom opening, c, of the socketpiece and passing it upward, then passing it (No model.)
laterally, so that its head b will pass over the ledges d, and then dropping it onto the ledges c, all as shown by the dotted arrow in Fig. l, which indicates the manner in which` the screw is introduced into the socket.
As soon as the head a of the screw is seated on the ledges e, the screw is prevented from turning, the configuration of the socket being such as to conne its head, and by turning the leg C in the proper direction it can be firmly screwed against the corner-post B. By an inverse operation the leg may be easily detached again.
The socket-piece D is preferably made of rounding shape, so that the recesses in the corner-post B may be easily made with a bit, and it may be open at the front side, so as to allow the introduction of the screw from the side instead of from the bottom, as shown 5 but this latter construction I deem preferable, as it admits of putting under the corner-post a wooden corner-plate, F, which gives to the leg a rm bearing and strengthens the corner of the table.
What I claim as my invention is- 1. In a removable table-leg, the screw E, partly secured into the upper end ofthe leg and partly projecting therefrom, and provided with a rectangular head, a, a socket formed in the corner-post having an opening for introducing the projecting end of the screw, and a lateral offset connecting with said opening, and which is of corresponding shape with the head of the screw to prevent it from turning, all arranged substantially a's and for the purposes described.
2. In a removable table-leg, the screw E, partly entering the table-leg and partly projecting therefrom, and provided 'with an angular head, in combination with a metal socket secured in the corner-post of the table and provided with a suitable opening leading into a lateral offset into which the projecting end of the screw can be introduced, and which is of corresponding shape to the head of the screw to prevent it from turning, all arranged substantially as and for the purpose described.
3. In a removable table-leg, the screw E,
partly entering the table-leg and partly prol the head of the screw to prevent it from turnjeotng from it, inv Combination With a metal ing, all arranged and operating substantially socket secured in the corner-post of the table in the manner and for the purposes specified. Io
and adapted to receive the projecting end of THADDEUS C. BEACH. 5 the screw, said metal socket having a lateral Witnesses:
oset and a drop at the end of said lateral E. J. SOULLY, socket, which is of corresponding shape to H. S. SPRAGUE.
