To all whom t may concern:

Be it known Athat I, MARION SCUDDER BUCKNER, of Savannah, in the county of Chatham and State of Georgia, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Vindows, of which the following is a full, clear, and eX- act description.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specitication, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the iigures.

Figure l is a front elevation, partly in section, of a part of a window to which my improvement has been applied. Fig .2 is a sectional plan view of the same, taken through the broken line x c x a; x x, Fig. l.

The object of this invention is to facilitate the washing of windows and promote convenience in opening and closing the said windows.

'Ihe invention relates to a window-sash inade in two parts and connected with the casing by hinges and hinging pieces pro vided with iiatheaded bolts engaging with guide-plates connected with the said casing, whereby the said sash can be raised and lowered like an ordinary sash and opened and closed like a door, and will be securely connected with the casing. The two parts of the sliding and hinged windowsash are fastcned together, when closed, by bolts, as will be hereinafter fully described and then claimed.

A represents a window'casing, in which are formed weight-boxes B in the ordinary manner, and to which are attached guards C, to form grooves for the sashes to slide up and down in.

D is the lower sash, and E is the upper sash, which sashes may be provided with balancing-weights F and cords G, or not, as may be desired.

Each of the sashes D E is made in two parts, rabbeted at their inner and outer edges to form close joints, and connected at their outer edges by hinges H to pieces I, iitted into and sliding up and down in `the grooves of the casing A. To each hinge-piece I are attached two or more bolts, J, as the size and weight of the sash may require. The bolts J pass through holes in the hinge pieces I,

the inner sides of the hinge-pieces I so far as to nnderlap the adjacent edges of the metal guide-plates K, secured to and between the guards C and the casing A, space being obtained for the bolt-heads by grooving the casing A at the bottoms of the sash-grooves, or by interposing thin strips L between the said guide-plates and casing. rlhe latter arrangement is shown in the drawings.

The parts of the sashes, when closed, are fastened together by bolts M, let into the top and bottom rails oi' one part of the sash, and shooting into sockets in the other part, as shown in full and dotted lines in Fig. l, and in full lines in Fig. 2.

Vith this construction the sashes D E can be raised and lowered with the same facility as ordinary sashes, and can also be swung open and shut upon the hinges H in the manner of ordinary hinged doors, so that the outer sides of the window can be readily washed,

I do not claim, broadly, a sash made of two parts hinged to swing horizontally on two vertical bars that are held to slide vertically in the window-frame, as I am aware that such is not new.

I am aware that a two-part window-sash has been hinged to strips provided with T- shaped tongues fitted to slide in corresponding grooves in the window-frame, and disclaim such broadly as of my invention.
