UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALBERT H. RGGER, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
WINDOW.
SPECIFICATION forming part; of Letters Patent No. 375,000, dated December 20, 1887.
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be itknown that I, ALBERT H. RLSGER, asubject of the Emperor of Germany, having resided in the United States one year last past and declared my intention of becoming a citizen thereof, residing at'Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Windows, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 represents a face View, partly broken away, of a window, looking from the inside of an apartment embodyingmy invention. Fig. 2 represents a horizontal section thereof in line 00 00, Fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate corre sponding parts in the two figures.
My invention consists of a window formed of sliding sashes which are fitted to a hinged frame, whereby the sashes, in addition to be-. ing adapted to raise and lower, may be opened after the manner of a door.
It also consists of a novel fastening for the windowframe.
Referring to the drawings, A represents a window-frame, which has raising and lowering sashes B B, the latter being provided with boxes, sash-weights, and cords, as usual with such sashes. The frame A is connected with a frame, 0, by means of hinges D, whereby the window may be opened and closed after the manner of a door, the frame 0 being stationary and set in the wall of the building.
It will be seen that the outside of the window is readily accessible byswinging the window inwardly, and the window may be entirely opened for purposes of light, air, and ventilation.
In order to fasten the window-frame I employ spring-pressed plugs E, having a rounded head, which are fitted in boxes F, secured to the frame 0 and appearing at the inner side thereof, and adapted to enter sockets or ope11- ings G in the face-plates H on the side stiles Application filed March 17, 1887. Serial No. 231,920. No model.)
of the window-frame A, said plates being slightly inclined, so that during the operation of closing the window the plugs E yield and ride on said plates, and then drop into the sockets G, whereby the window-frame is held closed.
The plug E has a rounded head, so that when the sash is drawn inwardly the said plug is readily pressed back, so that it is free from the socket, thereby permitting the opening of the sash when desired.
I am aware that it is not new to construct a swinging window-frame having verticallymoving sashes therein; but I am not aware that the peculiar construction and arrangement of parts whereby the frame can either be readily closed or opened, as herein shown and described, has ever been employed.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a combined sash and window-frame, a hinged window-frame having an inclined plate with socket therein, secured to one of the'side stiles thereof, in combination with the spring plug having a rounded head adapted to enter said socket, said plug being secured in a box in an inclosing-frame for said hinged windowframe, substantially as and for the purpose set fort-h.
2. In a combined sash and window-frame, the combination of the hinged window-frame A, having the raising and lowering sashes B B, and the inclined plate H, having the socket G therein, with the frame 0, having the box F, with the spring-pressed plug E, the latter having a rounded head adapted to enter the said socket G, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
