WINDOW FRAME AND SASH. No. 257,503. Patented May 9,1882.
UNITED STATES PATENT Orrtcs.
MICHAEL W. MAHAR, OF DAYTON, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO STEPHEN CRANE, OF HAMILTON, OHIO.
WINDOW FRAME AND SASH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 257,503, dated May 9, 18812,
' Application filed January 21,1882. (No model.\
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, M. W. MAHAR, of Dayton, in the county of Montgomery and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Window Frames and Sashes,
which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is an inside view of a window IO equipped with my improvement. Fig.2 is a horizontal sectional view of the same through line 00 of Fig.1. Fig. 3 is a view, as shown in Fig. 2, with the lower sash partly open. Fig. 4 is an enlarged horizontal sectional view of the hinged part of the sash and frame.
The object of my invention is to provide a means of hinging window-sash to the frame, so that they may be used, as in the ordinary manner, either to be raised or lowered, and be counterbalanced by weights, and, in addition to this old and wellknown style, he hinged, so that they may be opened and closed like an ordinary door. I
It consists in having one of the sides of the 2 frame provided with a dovetail or T groove, or a piece so grooved placed thereon,in which groove is placed a strip having a properly-provided tongue. To this strip the window is hinged, as will he now more fully described in 0 detail.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, A represents the window-frame, constructed in the ordinary manner except that the grooves for the window-strip are not formed therein.
Instead thereof strips B B are secured to the frame within at each side, as shown, in which groovesfor the outsidestrips,D,maybeformed.
The strip B is provided with dovetailor T grooves 0, so as to coincide with the location .40 of the upper and lower window-sash when in position. In these grooves are placed strips F F, having the dovetail or T tongues. The strips F are the same length as the windowsash, and tit loosely in the grooves, so that when the sash H G is hinged at I to the strips 5 F F the strips will slide up and down in the grooves in the sash. The strip B on the opposite side of the frame has hinged thereto, at the inner side, a strip, E,which, when turned in, secures the sash in place, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. Fig. 3 shows this strip turned out,
so as to permit the sash to swing open. It will be observed that by this arrangement a swinging sash is permitted, while at the same time weights can be attached to the strips F F, as 5 with the ordinary sash. The strips B B are made separate from the frame, since the strips F must be placed in the grooves O after the frame is completed.
Havingdescribedmyinvention, whatI claim 0 is- In a windmr-frame, the strip, secured within the frame as shown, provided with dovetail or T grooves O, to coincide with the position of the sash, in combination with the strip I3, hav- 6 ing hinged to its inneredge the sash-retaining strip E, substantially as herein shown.
2. In awindow-sash, the strips F, secured to the strip B by means of dovetail or T tongues working in similarly-formed grooves, and hav- 7o ing the window-sash G H hinged thereto, substantially as and for the purpose herein set forth.
3. In a window-sash and frame, the frame having the strip provided. with dovetail or T grooves O, and the strips B,provided with the hinged retainingstrip E, in combination with the strips F,provided with tongues operating in groovesO, having hinged thereto the sash G H, substantially as and for the purpose herein shown.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand, this 9th day of January, 1881,1'11 the presence of witnesses.
MICHAEL WILLIAM MAHAR. Witnesses:
ALVA H. Dean, H. H. WAYMAN.
