To all whom, it may concern:

Be it known that I, DANIEL SCHUYLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Los Angeles, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Doors, VVindoWs, or the Like. of which the following is a specification.

An object of my invention is to aii'ord sightly and acceptable means for the more perfect security and protection of the inmates of a dwelling or a room therein against intrusion, either known or surreptitious, and at the same time to allow the inmates perfect freedom of communication with any person on the outside and also to allow the room to be ventilated through the door with perfect security against intrusion therethrough. I

A further Objectis to provide superior, neat, compact, and convenient means whereby a doorway may be doubly closed.

Itis an object of' my invention to afford unobtrusive means whereby the woman of the house may with safety see and talk with the person seeking admittance through the doorway, she being protected against the intrusion of dangerous or objectionable persons.

Another object is to enable a person to quickly, conveniently, and readily adjust and secure the double closers so as to most effectively serve the purpose stated in the foregoing clause.

Another object is to provide sightly and unobtrusive means whereby the screens and grilles of the outside of buildings will be protected against theinjurious action of the outdoor elements.

Another object is to do away with all unsightly appearance of screen-doors at the fronts of houses; also, to avoid any accumulation of dust on the grille or screen of a ventilating-door when the same is not in use; also, to make provision whereby a house may be provided with an unobtrusive storm-door.

By my invention it is made possible to ventilate a room through a screen which is guarded by an outer door while the same` is partly open. It is also made possible to provide an air-space for the outside door by closing the screen portion of the screen-door or otherwise providing a solid door in the place of the screen-door to form a storm-door for winter use Another object is to accomplish all the objects stated above in a compact appliance whereby two closers are readily controllable by the occupant of the house while within beyond the inner closer.

Another object is to provide a more satisfactory arrangement for the connecting-doors in suites of rooms for hotels and other buildings.

By myinvention the occupant of each room is given control of a door for the openingbctween his room and the adjoining room and is enabled to lock the door when fully closed or partly closed, as desired, thus making provision for communication and ventilation between the rooms without the danger of intrusion of any person from either room to the other.

This invention also provides a sound-deadening air-space in thc door-openings between rooms, thus affording for the rooms of hotels and the like convenient and unobtrusive means for isolating from each other the several rooms of a suite.

In this invention I provide a building having a doorway and a pocket-space formed in the wall on one side of such doorway and adapted to receive two parallel doors in combination with two sliding doors adapted to either singly and interchangeably or simultaneously close the opening and arranged in closely approximating planes, so that a pocket-space for both may be provided without substantially increasing the thickness of the wall, and in further carrying out the iuvention I provide means for securing each door either in a wholly or in a practically closed position. The construction of' pocketspace in buildings involves extra care and trouble for each space so constructed, and by arranging such space at the same time and at the same place for both doors on the same side of the opening many of thc foregoing objects are accomplished and double care and trouble are avoided.

Two edgewise-moving closers are provided, each constructed to extend across the opening and sliding in said opening and pocket to close and open the opening'. de indicate these two closers. Suitable means are provided for locking the two closers independently of each other. Provision is made for locking the outer edge of one of said closers to the frame at the side of the opening opposite the mouth of the pocket, and means are provided for locking the inner edg'e of the other closer to the frame at the mouth of the pocket. Any suitable means may be employed for thus locking the closers. In the drawings I have shown alockf on the outer edge of one closer Z to catch in the catch g on the jamb /L of the frame on the side of the opening' opposite the mouth of the pocket c and have shown a lock on the inner edge of the other closer e to catch in a catch j' on the frame at the mouth of the pocket. The closer e is provided with a lock f to catch in a second catch g in the jamb t.

For greater convenience and security I prefer that each of the doors shall be thus provided with a lock at each front and back edge.

Any form of lock suitable therefor may be employed for either edge of either door; but I prefer to use for the inner edge of the door my keyless security for doorways andthe like shown in the drawings. This lock, as clearly shown in Fig. III, consists in a shaft 1, journaled in the closer and furnished with alocking-arm 2 and also furnished at a distance from the arm with a handle 3 to enable said arm to be brought into engagement with a stationary catch 7' on the frame and to be disengaged therefrom by the rotation of the shaft. This is a separate invention fully described and claimed in my application for Letters Patent of the United States filed contemporaneous herewith December 14, 1900, Serial No. 39,893.

In practical use for outside doors the inner closer may be simply a screen door of ordinary construction; but I prefer to use a closer e furnished with a screened and grilled opening li, the grille m of which alords protection against intrusion of persons, and the wire screen a affords protection against the intrusion of insects. The outer closer d is preferably furnished with an upper translucent or transparent panel o. In the case of outside doors when the outside closer CZ is closed the inside closer e, with its grille m and wire-cloth screen n, will be protected from the action of the outside elements and may be left open or closed indiscriminately at the pleasure of the unlocked and the outer closer slid open, thus enabling the occupant to inspect and converse with the caller without any danger of the forced intrusion of the caller. In the case of outside doors the locks at the inner edges of both closers will be on the inner sides of said closers, respectively, and the catch 7 for the lock e" of the outer closer will be mounted on the parting-rail 4 of the frame.

Thenever it is desired to ventilate the house through the outer door, the screened and grilled inner closer e will be locked closed, while the outer closer Z is left partially or fully open. For additional security at night the lock t" on the inner edge of the outer closer Z may be locked, leaving' the doorway partially open, and the inner screen-closer may be locked in its fully-closed position by one or both of its locks, thus giving the protection of two locked doors, the inner one being doubly locked. I'Vhen ventilation through the front door is not desired, both doors may be fully closed and doubly locked.

The locks at the inner edges of the closers are arranged to lock the closers, respectively, at intervals to allow the same to be locked entirely closed or open more or less within a limit of several inches. The opening' at the jamb /t of the door is limited within a few inches to prevent intrusion of any person through such opening. The lock for the closer being' locked at the inner edge of the closer prevents the same from being reached by the hand of any would-be intruder.

In ease of openings between the apartments of a suite of rooms the two closers will both be solid and each may be furnished at each edge with a lock. The locks at the inner edges of the closers will be on the room side of said closers, respectively, as shown in Fig. IV, so that the occupants of the respective rooms Amay lock their respective closers entirely closed or nearly closed, as each may see lit, and by agreement between the occupants of the two rooms each door may be locked nearly closed, thus allowingventilation and communication between the rooms without allowing the intrusion of any person from either room into the other. The locks at the outer edges of such closers, it is to be understood, may be dispensed with, if desired, the purpose of such locks being' simply a double security and the usual convenience pertaining' to such locks. It will be understood from Figs. IL Hl, and 1V that both closers may slide in the opening to the'jamb /t to unitedly close the opening' or to singly close the opening or to unitedly open the opening and that the catches g g in the jamb /t may both be used for simultaneously locking both of the closers for unitedly closing the opening', and it will be understood that this use of the invention will provide an insulating air-space between the closers thus closed, thus giving superior protection against storms and cold weather when the solid closers are used for outside openings and aording' insulation against noise between rooms having an intereommunieating door.

Vhat 1 claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-

l. A building having a doorway and a pocket-space formed in the wallon one side of such doorway and adapted to receive two parallel doors, in combination with two sliding doors adapted to either singly and interchangeably or simultaneously close the opening and arranged in closely-approximating planes so that a pocket-space for both may be provided withoutsubstantially increasing the thickness oi' the wall. l

2. A building having a doorway and a pocket-space formed in the wall on one side of such doorway and adapted to receive two parallel doors, in combination with two sliding' doors adapted to either singly and interchangeably or simultaneously close the opening' and arranged in closely-approXimating planes so y that a pocket-space for both may be provided without substantially increasing the thickness of the wall, and means tor securing each door either in a wholly or in a Vpractically closed position.

3. A door or the like comprising a frame furnished with an opening' and with a pocket at the side of the opening; two closers, each constructed to extend across the opening, and sliding in said opening and pocket to close and open the opening; means for locking' the outer edge otone of said closers to the frame at the side of the opening opposite the mouth of the pocket; and means for locking the inner edge of the other closer to the 'frame at the mouth of the pocket.

5. A door or the like comprising a frame furnished with an opening' and with a pocket at one edge of the opening; an outer closer and an inner closer sliding' in the opening and pocket, side by side; the pocket being adapted to house either and both of the closers; and means for locking' the inner edge of the inner closer to the frame.

6. A door or the like comprising a frame furnished with an opening and with a pocket at one edge of the opening; an outer closer and an inner closer sliding' in the opening and pocket, side by side; the pocket being adapted to house either and both oit' the closers; and means for locking the inner edge ofthe inner closer to the frame at intervals.

7. A door or the like comprising a Jframe furnished with anopening' and with a pocket at one edge of the opening; an outer solid closer sliding' in the opening' and pocket; an inner screened closer sliding in the opening' and pocket; and means for locking the screened closer partly open.

8. A door or the like comprising' a frame furnished with an opening' and with a pocket at one edge of the opening; two closers sliding' in the opening' and pocket, side by side; means at one side of the frame for locking' 'one of the closers partly open; and means at the saine side of the frame lor locking' the other closer partly open.

9. The combination of a frame furnished with an opening' and with a jamb at one side oi' the opening and two catches in said jamb, and a pocket at the other side of the opening; two edg'ewise moving' closers in the pocket arranged to move to and from the jamb to independently close the opening' and to unitedly open the opening; and means for fastening' the closers to the 'frame at that side of the opening' which is opposite said jamb.
