BEAUTICIANS DRYER CHAIR Filed Dec. 10, 1964 United States Patent 3,248,146 BEAUTICIANS DRYER CHAIR Theodore A. Cowen, Jr., Belvidere, Ill., assignor to Belvedere Products, Inc., Belvidere, 111., a corporation of Illinois Filed Dec. 10, 1964, Ser. No. 417,410 Claims. (Cl. 297-217) This invention relates to a new and improved beauticians dryer chair.
An important object of this invention is to provide an improved beauticians dryer chair having a housing for receiving a hair dryer apparatus and for providing the sole support for the rear side of the chair seat.
Another object of this invenion is to provide a beauticians dryer chair which allows relatively easy cleaning of the area under the chair seat.
A further object of this invention is to provide a beauticians dryer chair including a housing for receiving and storing a hair dryer apparatus and the housing being a structural part of the chair for moving as a unit.
These, and other objects and advantages of the invention will be more readily apparent by reference to the following detailed description and the accompanying drawings wherein:
FIGURE 1 is a side view of the improved beauticians dryer chair which is the embodiment of this invention;
FIG. 2 is a rear view of the dryer chair taken along plane 2-2 of FIG. 1 and with a part broken away to reveal internal construction of the housing; and
FIG. 3 is a sectional view of the dryer chair taken along plane 3-3 of FIG. 2.
Referring further to the drawings, the dryer chair includes a housing portion generally indicated by the numeral 10. The housing portion has a cavity 11, as best indicated in FIGS. 2 and 3, for receiving the lower portion 31 of the hair dryer apparatus 30 which portion is hereinafter sometimes generally referred to as the dryer base. The housing has a front wall 12 and side walls 13 and 14 generally defining the cavity 11. The housing conveniently includes a back wall 15; however, it is contemplated that such is not'required. The housing 10 includes a means for supporting the dryer base 31, which means of support conveniently includes a frame 16, a floor 17, sidewalls 18 and 19, and a front wall 20. It is contemplated that changes in the form, shape, and arrangement of the means of support can be made without departing from the spirit of this invention. In the embodiment illustrated, the dryer base 31 is conveniently retained in place, or supported, by a strap 21 secured to the housing back 15 by means of screws 22. It is contemplated that other means may be utilized for retaining the dryer base 31 or that, under proper arrangement, the strap 21 may be eliminated altogether.
The hair dryer apparatus 30 referred to supra, includes a base portion 31, a neck portion 32 and a head portion 33 secured to the upper end thereof. The dryer base 31 conveniently encloses a blower apparatus 35 and a heater apparatus 36-. The blower 35 draws air through a .grill work 37 conveniently located at the rear side of the dryer base 31. The air is then propelled through the heater apparatus 36 and through a hollow portion 38 of the neck 32 into the head 33. The dryer head 33 may be of a well known type having inner and outer walls defining a cavity 33' therebetween and with perforations in the inner wall for discharging air at spaced points for drying the hair of an occupant of the dryer chair. The neck portion 32 conveniently extends upwardly and forwardly to position the head 33 for receiving the head of the chair occupant. Controls 39 for the blower apparatus 3-5 and the heater apparatus 36 are conveniently mounted on the top side of the base 31, as best illustrated in FIG. 2. In the embodiment illustrated, the neck 32 is conveniently adjustable in a vertical direction and is secured in a preselected position as by a collar 34. In this manner, the neck and head 33 may be raised out of position when the occupant is to be seated, and then lowered to an operative position whereby the occupant may have her head substantially encircled by the dryer head 33. It is contemplated that many variations in the dryer apparatus may be utilized without departing from the'spirit of thisinvention, and the description and drawings are to be taken as illustrative and not limiting.
The housing 10 includes a means for supporting the back side of a seat member 45. In the embodiment illustrated, the means of support is preferably in the form of a pair of outwardly extending arms or structures 23. The arms 23 are preferably secured to the respective side walls 13 or 14 of the housing by means of bolts 24 as best illustrated in FIG. 3. The seat member 45 is secured to a seat frame 46 which is attached to the arms 23 by means of bolts 47. In this manner, the arms 23 provide the sole support for the back side of the seat member 45. The aforedescribed preferable manner of securing the arms 23 to the housing 10 is such that it provides a rigid support for the back side of the seat member 45 and, conversely, serves as a rigid structural connection between the two, so that the unit may be moved without structural damage by lifting either the housing 10, or the seat member 45.
The seat member 45 has a leg means attached adjacent the front side of the seat member to provide support for said front side. In the embodiment illustrated, the leg means is conveniently in the form of a pair of front legs 48; however, it is contemplated that, in the alternative, either one or a greater plurality of legs 48 may be utilized. Arm supports 49 are attached to respective arm frames 50 which are secured to the base frame 46. The back member 44 is conveniently secured to the arm frames 50 by a plurality of bolts 51 as best illustrated in FIGS. 1 and 2. It is contemplated, however, that the back member 44 may be otherwise held in position, or that it may be a cushion conveniently lying contiguous to the inclined upward portion of the front wall 12 of the housing 10.
As described supra and as illustrated in FIGS. 1 and 2, the seat member 45 is attached to the housing portion intermediate the upper and lower ends thereof. As a result, the back side of the cushion preferably lies near to the front face 12 of the housing 10. In this position,
' thereby provides a generally unobscured area beneath the seat member 45 which can be readily cleaned.
Fromthe foregoing, it is deemed apparent that the preferred embodiment of this invention provides a unique beauticians dryer chair providing a housing for a dryer apparatus which housing also serves to provide the sole support for the backside of the seat of the chair.
While I have thus described a specific embodiment of my invention, it has been by way of illustration and not limitation, and I do not wish my invention to be limited except as required by the appended claims.
I claim:
