Description
Aug. 21, 1956 E. F. RIES MULTIPLE PURPOSE INVALID WALKER Filed Dec. 28, 1954 INVENTOR. ELMER F'. RlES.
' v ATTORNEZ United States Patent MULTIPLE PURPOSE INVALID WALKER Elmer F. Ries, Cincinnati, Ohio Application December 28, 1954, Serial No. 478,077
Claims. (Cl. 155-22) This invention relates to an improved multiple purpose invalid walker to give the user a complete walker with accessories to permit the user to use the device as a walker, a wheel chair, or to use the walker with crutches for arm support, or the body supports for extremely weak patients, or with the seat in place and the feeding tray attached to be used for supporting food or other material. The lateral spread is such that, with seat removed, the walker can be placed over a standard commode.
The object of my invention is to provide a wheeled device having a frame constructed for attachment of crutches, seat and feeding tray to be used for multiple purposes by an invalid.
A further object is to provide means for permitting movement of the seat without completely disattaching the seat from the walker.
A further object is to provide adjustable crutches or body supports in conjunction with the walker.
Further objects will be apparent as the description progresses.
My invention will be further readily understood from the following description and claims, and from the drawings in which latter:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of the walker with the accessories removed.
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the same with the accessories in place.
Fig. 3 is a detail section, taken in the plane of the line 33 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 is a detail section, taken in the plane of the line 4-4 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 5 is a detail perspective view of the body supports.
My improved multiple purpose invalid walker comprises a tubular frame consisting of tubular welded members forming side frames 11 with rearwardly and down wardly extending members 12. Cross connecting members 13 and 14 are welded to the side members to hold the frames in spaced position. Rubber tired casters 15 are secured to the extending ends of the frame. Two sets of sockets 16 and 17 are an integral part of the frame, one extending higher than other. A seat 18 and back 19 are formed of tubular members and have extensions 20 and 21 received in either of the sockets 16 or 17. The extension 21 is of greater length than the extension 20 to permit raising and swinging the seat to one side to permit entry between the frames.
A tray 22 is provided with rubber covered hooks 23 arranged to engage the cross members 13 and a bracing bar 24 extends from the tray and engages the cross member 14 to hold the tray in position, whereby the user of the device can serve himself. The walker is also provided with an adjustable foot rest 25 slidable on the lower rails 26 of the walker.
ice
My improved multiple purpose invalid walker can be used as a walker, with or without the crutches or body supports, with the seat attached and the foot rest as a wheel chair to which the feeding tray can be attached thus providing for complete service to the invalid. The lateral spread between the frames is such that, with the seat removed, the walker can be placed over a standard commode.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
l. A multiple purpose invalid walker comprising a pair of side frames, cross-bars connecting the forward uprights of said side frames, base members connecting the legs of each frame, rollers on the legs of said frame, the rear of said frame provided with two sets of sockets of different height, and a seat provided with a pair of extensions of different length for reception in either pair of sockets.
2. A multiple purpose invalid walker comprising a pair of side frames, cross-bars connecting the forward uprights of said side frames, base members connecting the legs of each frame, rollers on the legs of said frame, the rear of said frame provided with two sets of sockets of different height, a seat provided with a pair of extensions of different length for reception in either pair of sockets, and an adjustable foot rest slidable on said base members.
3. A multiple purpose invalid walker comprising a pair of side frames, cross-bars connecting the forward uprights of said side frames, base members connecting the legs of each frame, rollers on the legs of said frame, the rear of said frame provided with two sets of sockets of different height, a seat provided with a pair of extensions of different length for reception in either pair of sockets, an adjustable foot rest slidable on said base members, and a removable tray supported on said cross-bars.
4. A multiple purpose invalid walker comprising side frames having a horizontal portion and extending legs, rollers on the legs of said frames, cross-bars connecting the forward uprights of said side frames, the rear of said side frames extending angularly to seat sockets, clamps adjustable on the horizontal portion of said frames for holding upwardly extending supporting members.
5. A multiple purpose invalid walker comprising side frames having a horizontal portion and extending legs, rollers on the legs of said frames, cross-bars connecting the forward uprights of said side frames, the rear of said side frames extending angularly to seat sockets, clamps adjustable on the horizontal portion of said frames for holding upwardly extending supporting members, and means on said clamps for holding in adjusted position said extending supporting members.
