COLLAPSIBLE LEG-REST CHAIR.
Application filed October 11, 1927. Serial No. 225,411.
This invention relates to a collapsible chair and has for one of its objects the provision of spaced apart leg rests which. may be employed for supporting the legs of an occupant when the latter is sprawled in a semireclined position. p
A further object of my invention isv the provision of spaced apart leg rests the ends of which may be positioned at a suitable angle for comfortably supporting the legsof an occupant.
A still further object of my invention is the provision of a chair comprising adjustable leg rests having foot supports adjustably mounted thereon.
Other objectswill appear hereinafter, the novel features and combinations being clearly set forth in the appended claims.
In the drawings,
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a chair embodying my invention and illustrating an occupant reclined therein.
Fig. 2 is a side elevational view of a chair embodying my invention.
Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional View taken on the line 33 of Fig. 2.
Fig. at is a side view of a chair embodying my invention illustrated in folded position.
Fig. 5 is a side elevational View of a chair embodying a modification of my invention.
Fig. 6 is a fragmentary sectional view taken on the line 66 of Fig. 5.
Referring particularly to the drawing, the numeral 10 indicates one side of a diagonally disposed rectangular frame and the numeral 11 designates the opposite side thereof. The sides 10 and 11 are attached together by lateral cleats 12 and 13 at the upper and lower end portions, respectively. A second rectangular frame comprising sides 14 and 15 and cleats 16 and 17 is disposed within the first mentioned frame and pivotally attached thereto intermediate the extremities of the side members by bolts 18 and 19. Arms 20 and 21 are pivotally attached to the side members 10 and 11 respectively, and are connected by a cleat 22. The cleat 22 is adapted to be positioned in notches 23 formed in the rear end portions of the sides 14: and 15 of the second mentioned frame for retaining the rear of the two frames in spaced relation. A fabric member 2 1 is disposed at its rear edge portion around the cleat 12 of the first mentioned frame and is provided with stitches 25 which secure the end portion in superimposed relation for forming a hem. The forward end portion ofthe fabric member 24, is similarly mounted on the forward cleat. 17 of the second mentioned frame.
Leg rests 26 and 27are. pivotally attached to the side members 11 and 10, respectively, by hinges 27 and extend substantially horizontally in advance of the forward ends. of said side members. The forward end portions of the leg rests 26 and 27 are supported by arms 28 and 29, respectively, pivotally attached to the forward end portions of the sides 11 and 10, respectively, by bolts 30 and 31. The upper extremities of the arms 28 and 29. may be selectively engaged in any of the recesses 32 and 33 of the leg rests 26 and 27, respectively, for suitably supporting the latter at a desired inclination, It should be understood that the leg rests 2.6 and 27 may be retained in different inclined positions and that an occupant of the chair may sprawl one leg over one rest and the other leg over the other rest thus permitting the occupant to recline with his legs raised and comfortably supported.
The second mentioned frame comprising sides 14 and 15 is adapted to be folded into the plane of the first mentioned frame as illustrated in Fig. 1. The arms 28 and 29 may be disposed parallel to the sides 11 and 10, respectively, and the rear supporting frame comprising; arms 20 and 21 and cleat 22 may be rotated until the cleat 22 engages the sides 10, 11, 14;, and 15; it being understood that the cleat 22 prevents the second mentioned or inner frame from being rotated clockwise as viewed in Fig. 4 relative to the first mentioned frame. \Vhen the chair is in folded position the inner frame is disposed between the cleat 22 on the bottom and the leg rest-s 26 and 27 on the top.
In the modified form of my invention illustrated in Figs. 5 and 6 each of the leg rests comprise a forward rotatively mounted section 34 attached by a hinge 35 to the rear section 86. An arcuate shaped bracket 37 is rigidly attached at one extremity to the forward section 34: and is provided with an arcuate slot 38. A thumb bolt 39 is disposed through an aperture in the arm 29 and through the slot 38 and is adapted to be tightened for holding the bracket and the forward section in an adjusted position.
A foot rest 40 comprising a base 11 and a pin 42 thereon is adjustably mounted in a recess 44 in the upper side of the forward section 34. -The foot rest 40 is disposed at an angle to the longitudinal axis of the forward extremity 34 and is adapted to engage the sole of a shoe or foot for preventing sliding of an occupant off the chair. It should be understood that the foot rest 40 may be removed when desired and that it may be adjustably positioned by engaging the pin 42 in any one of the recesses 44 formed in the forward section 34.
It should also be understood that the general construction of the chair embodied in the form of my invention illustrated in Figs.
5 and 6 is similar to the construction above described.
Obviously, those skilled in the art may make various changes in the details and arrangement of parts described without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention set forth in the claims hereto appended.
one of said frames, supports pivotally attached to the sides of said frame adapted to engage said rear leg rest sections for supporting the same, a forward leg rest section pivotally attached to each of said rear leg rest sections, brackets rigidly mounted on said forward sections adapted to be clamped to said supports for retaining said forward sections in an adjusted position, and a foot rest adjustably mounted on each of said forward sections adapted to prevent sliding of an occupant off said chair. 7 I
2. In a collapsible chair of the class described, arm leg rest members each comprising a substantially horizontal rear section adapted to support the arms of a user, a forward leg rest section adjustably attached to the front extremity of each of said rear sections adapted to be disposed at a downward inclination to the rear sections for supporting that portion of a leg between the foot and knee thereof, and a foot plate mounted on said adjustable leg sections disposed diagonally across the Width thereof for engaging the sole of a foot to support the same.
