CHAIR.
To all whom z'tmayconcern:
Be it known that I, LoUIs T. KOERNER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Evansville, in the county of Vanderburg and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Chair, of which the following is a specification.
The subject of this invention is a chair and may be either a straight chair or a rocker, the construction being adapted to either form.
The main object of the invention is the provision of a chair which may be adjusted to roperly support different users.
other object of the invention is the provision of means for adjusting the back of a chair.
Another object of the invention is the provision ofmeans for adjusting the seat of a chair.
The invention also contemplates generally improving the construction and enhancing the utility of chairs.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed can be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
A practical embodiment of the invention is shown in the accompanying drawing, wherein Figure 1 i a sectional view of a chair constructed in accordance with the invention, the same taken on the line 1-1 of Fig. 2;
Fig. 2 is a'view in rear elevation of the same; 7
Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of a modified form of seat adjusting member.
Referring to the drawing by numerals of reference In carrying out the invention a chair is provided which is formed of the side pieces or frames 1 which may be as shown, or to which rockers (not shown) may be attached in the usual and well known manner. The side pieces 1 are connected by the cross piece 2, at the head of the back; the cross piece 3 at the rear of and underlying the seat; and the cross piece 4 at the front of and underlying the seat. A cross brace 5 may also be provided for the purpose of connecting and Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Dec 30, 1919, Application filed July 26, 1918. Serial No. 246,908. 1 I
supporting the leg portion of the side pieces 1.
Positioned between the side pieces 1, and secured to the cross piece 2, i a head board 6 to the lower end of which is secured by hinges 7 or otherwise the back 8. The back 8 is suitably curved, as shown, to conform to the contour of the human back. The lower end of the back is recessed. to receive latches 9 which are provided with operative buttons 10, and which are forced downwardly to extend from the recesses by the coiled springs 11 or the like. Spaced sockets 12 are provided in the seat 13 for the reception of the extending ends of the latches 9 so that the back 8 may be held in selected position.
The seat 13 is normally supported on the cross bars 3 and 4, and the seat is provided at its rear end with the laterally extending lugs 14, which are adapted to project into the slots 15, formed in the sides 1, in the lower edges of which slots are provided racks to permit the lugs to be moved to and held in selected positions, and so adjust the seat rearwardly or forwardly.
In order that the front end of the seat may be adjusted to a proper height to suit the user of the chair, the seat is provided, adjacent it front end and on its under surface, with spaced sockets 16 which are adapted to receive pins 17, which are secured to and rise from a bar 18 when the bar is swung to its upper position. The bar 18 is hinged to the forward edge of the cross rod 4 and may be swung to rest upon the rod 4: with its pins 17 extending upwardly to enter the sockets 16, and thus erves to lift the forward end of the seat 13. The sockets 16 are likewise adapted to receive the pins 19 of the bar 20 which is hinged to the rear edge of the rod 4 and may be swung to position upon the rod 4 to further lift the forward end of the seat13.
In the modification shown in Fig. 3, the rod 4: is replaced by a rod 4, the ends of which are journaled in the side pieces 1 so that the rod may be rocked or rotated. Securely mounted on this rod, adjacent each end thereof, are cross pieces presenting extending portions 17 and 19 which are adapted to selectively support the front end of the seat when the cross pieces are swung to vertical position. As will be seen, the extending portions 17' are shorter than the portions 19 so that the latter serve to support the front end of the seat in a more elevated position than the former. The seat 13 is provided with the spaced notches 16 for the reception of the ends of the ortions l7 and 19. As will be understoo, the cross arms of the rod 4 are normally in a horizontal position With the seat resting thereon.
It is thought that the operation of the chair Will be amply understood from the foregoing description Without a special and extended explanation thereof.
Having thus described the invention, What i claimed as new and sought by Letters Patent, is
In a chair, an adjustable seat, side sections, a pivoted back supported between the
