Description

HEADREST Filed JamY 23. 192:3
INVENTOR 1710 -l 7 2 /7 @mam/add Patented Apr. 15, 1930 UNITED STATES FRED C. WARFIELD, OF JACKSON, MICHIGAN HEADREST Application filed January 23, 1952.8. Serial No. 248,770.
j The main object of this invention is to provide an improved head rest for the use of barbers, physicians, surgeons and undertakers by means of which the head may be supported in a wide range of positions, supporting the chin with the head ti ted forwardly or rearwardly as may be desired. A
A further object is to provide'a head rest having these advantages which is simple and economical in structure, is very easily adjusted and when adjusted is very secure.
Gbjects pertaining to details and economies of my invention will definitely appear from the description to follow. The invention is defined in the claims.
A structure embodying the features of my invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawing forming a part of this application, in which:
130 Fig. 1 is a front perspective view of my improved head rest in one extended position.
Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the head rest collapsed.
Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section on line 3-3 of Fig. 2. s
Fig. 4 is a transverse section on a line 4.-4 of Fig. 2.
Referring to the drawing my improved head rest comprises a base which in the embodiment illustrated is composed of side members 1, 1 and end cross members 2, 2, these members being of angle cross section and arranged with the angles facing inwardly and o downwardly. The vertical arms of the side m members have longitudinal slots 3 therein.
I provide a pair of extensible supports of the lazy tong type which in the embodiment illustrated comprise a pair of bottom links 4, l pivotally connected to each other at 5. The lower ends of one pair of these links are pivoted to the side members of the base at 6 while the other ends are engaged by the bolt 7 which is arranged through the slots 3. The
`4.5 bolt is provided with a thumb nut 8 so that both of these links are clamped to the frame by one adjustment of the nut.
The coiled springs 9 are provided for lifting or extending the head rest and are con- @il nected at one end to the frame by the studs 10, their other ends being connected to the bolts 7 Y Top links 11 are connected by the Vpivots 12 to the upperjends of the links 4. The upper ends of the links 11 are pivotally connected by means of the thumb screws 13 which are threaded into laterally extending bosses 14 on the head rest 15. This head rest is conformed to receive a head, being of general oval shape, and is provided with a neck engaging cross piece 16 at its front. The side members of the head rest project above the cross piece 16 at 17, thus more eiiiciently positioning the head.
This arrangement makes it practical to tilt the head in a variety of positionsthe extensible supports supporting it in the desired elevation. If it is desired to lift the chin the head rest may be tilted to accomplish this.
My improved head rest is adapted for the use of barbers in shaving people who are ill as it is capable of adjustment to effectivelysupport the head for this purpose. It is also desirable for use by physicians, surgeons and undertakers. t
Havingthus described my `invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A head-rest comprising a frame-like base having horizontal slots in the side members thereof, a pair of pivotally connected bottom links, one link of each pair beingpivoted on the sides of said base, a clamping bolt arrangedjthrough said slots and the lower ends of the other links of the pair and pro* vided with a `clamping nut, coiled springs connected atone end to said base and at the other to said bolt, `a pair of top links pivoted to the upper ends of said `bottom links, and a headrest conformed to receive a head and provided with a neck engaging cross piece at its front end with thumb screws engaging the upper ends of said top links whereby they are` pivotally connected and said head rest is secured in its adjusted positions.
2. A head-rest comprising a frame-like base having horizontal slots in the side members thereof, a pair of pivotally connected bottomV links,` one'link of each pair being pivoted on the sides of said base, a clampand said head rest is supported for tilting ading bolt arranged through said slots and the j ustment and secured in its adjusted positions. lower ends of the other links of the pair and In witness whereof I have hereunto set my provided with a clamping nut, a pair of hand 5 top links pivoted to the upper ends of said FRED C- WARFIELD 70 bottom links, and a head-rest provided with thumb screws engaging the upper ends of said top links whereby they are pivotally connected and said head rest is secured in its adjusted positions. 75
3. A head-rest comprising a frame-like base having horizontal slots in the side members thereof, a pair of pivotally connected bottom links, one link of each pair being pivoted on the sides of said base, a clamping bolt so arranged through said slots and the lower ends of the other links of the pair and provided with a clamping nut, and a pair of top links pivoted to the upper ends of said bot- ,o tom links, and a head-rest provided with tlfmvlnbl screws engaging the upper ends of said top links. whereby they are pivotally connetted and said head rest is secured in its adjusted positions.
g5 4. In a head-rest, the combination of a base 90 having longitudinal slots in the side edges thereof, a pair of lazy tong support members, one link of each pair of bottom links being pivotally secured to the sides of said so base member, the lower ends of the other bottom links being provided with a clamping bolt engaged in said slots, a head-rest conformed to receive a head and provided with a neck engaging cross piece pivotally mounted on the top links of said support and provided with clamping screws for securing it in adjusted position, and coiled springs arranged within said base and acting to extend said supports when the said clamping bolt thereof 40 is released. 105
5. In a head-rest, the combination of a base having longitudinal slots in the side edges thereof, a pair of lazy tong support members, one link of each pair of bottom 46 links being pivotally secured to the sides of 110 said base member, the lower ends of the other bottom links being provided with a clamping bolt engaged in said slots, and a headrest conformed to receive a head and 50 provided with a neck engaging cross piece 115 pivotally mounted on the top links of said support and provided with clamping screws for securing it in adjusted position.
6. In a head rest, the combination with a base, of a pair of pivotally connected bottom links, one link of each pair being pivotally connected to the base, the other links of the pairs being adjustably secured to the base, n a pair of top links pivoted on the upper ends 125 of said bottom links, a head rest conformed to receive a head, and thumb screws arranged throughvthey upper ends of said top links and having threaded engagement with said head Il nest-whereby thelinksre pivotally connected V 13
