United States Patent 3,153,892 TWISTING MACHINES EXECUTIN G A FALSE TWIST Jacques Biiiion, Lyon, France, assignor to Billion & Cie, Lyon, France, a company of France Filed Dec. 18, 1952, Ser. No. 245,542 Claims priority, appiication France, Dec. 22, 1961, 42,147, Patent 1,311,563 8 Claims. (Cl. 57-34) The machines intended for the continuous production of threads of the type generally termed sponge threads through the method consisting in sequence of a twisting, a fixing and an untwisting include in addition to the thread feeding and take off elements, a so-called false twist spindle and a heating kiln or casing.
The thread passing through the heating casing is guided generally in rectilinear or curvilinear tubes inside which it slides readily as a consequence of the special oiling to which it has been subjected during the spinning stage. In some cases, the thread is free inside the casing, but there is aiways at the outlet thereof a short tube, mouthpiece or ring guiding said thread.
The oiling which cuts out inter alia all electrostatic phenomena, is generally executed by means of oils which have a tendency to decompose under the action of heat and to form a deposit in such tubes in particular at the end through which the thread passes out of the kiln or the like heating casing.
In order to prevent the tube guiding the thread inside the kiln or casing from being gradually clogged, the machine producers have been led to subdivide longitudinally said tube into two sections of which the second end adjacent the outlet of the thread is removable. It is thus possible to remove said output section so as to clean or to replace them.
This output section or mouthpiece provided for such twisting machines is constituted by a shiftable hollow cylinder fitted on the end of the first section of the casing tube.
However such an arrangement shows a serious drawback since it is obvious that the thread, which is fed directly and without any break out of the feeding means into the take up means through the spindle and the casing, must be broken each time it is desired to remove and to clean the clogged mouthpiece.
In order to cut out such a drawback, the present invention consists in replacing said tubular mouthpiece having an unbroken peripheral wall by a tubular mouthpiece having a discontinuous peripheral wall.
In a preferred embodiment, the tube or at least the output section is slotted longitudinally, but said slot may as well be drawn along a helical line or otherwise.
Thus it is possible to remove the mouthpiece after disengaging it from the main section of the tube without breaking the thread, since the latter may slide outwardly through the slot provided for this purpose in the output section. It is therefore an easy matter to replace the clogged mouthpiece by a further mouthpiece without breaking the thread. This is done by setting the mouthpiece alongside the thread and the latter is caused to slide into the mouthpiece through its slot after which said mouthpiece is fitted on the remainder of the tube passing through the heating casing or kiln which compresses the slotted tube thereby closing the slot.
Thus, there is no need to break the thread, the machine may continue operating uninterruptedly and the cleaning of the mouthpiece may be performed while it is removed from the machine and thus under the best conditions.
The tubular mouthpiece having a slotted peripheral wall may also serve in the case of machines wherein the thread is guided only at the output end of the kiln or the ice like heating casing without being guided inside the latter. Said guiding may be performed through the sole agency of a short slotted tube, ring or mouthpiece.
In all cases, the invention will be readily understood from the reading of the following description, reference being made to the accompanying diagrammatic drawings. In the drawings:
FIG. 1 shows a thread extending between feeding means and take up means and extending through a false twist spindle and through a heating device in which the thread passes inside a guiding tube and the mouthpiece terminating the latter.
FIGS. 2 and 3 illustrate, on a larger scale, the tube mouthpiece improved in accordance with the invention.
FIG. 4 is a cross-section through line 4-4 of FIG. 2,
The thread or yarn 2 is unwound oif the feeding or supply means 3 onto the receiving or take up means 4 through the heating device or casing 5 inside which it extends in a guiding tube including two axially aligned sections '7 and 8, said casing being followed by the false twist spindle 6. The stationary tube 7 fixed in the casing 5 carries the removable mouthpiece 8 having an outwardly flaring free end, as shown at 8a. In order to allow an easy removal of said mouthpiece with a view to cleaning same and a ready repositioning of said mouthpiece without breaking the continuously running thread 2 and without stopping the machine, said mouthpiece 8 is provided with a longitudinal slot 9 open at both ends of which the width is at least equal to the diameter of the thread 2 so that it is possible to make the thread slide through said slot into and out of the mouthpiece.
When positioning the removable section 8 in the fixed section '7, the edges of the slot 9 may be closed by pressure exerted radially and inwardly on the outer wall of the mouthpiece 8, said pressure being applied by hand, or by means of pincers.
In a preferred embodiment of the invention, the elas ticity of the mouthpiece 8 is suiiicient for its engagement inside the enlarged cooperating end of the stationary section of the tube 7 and its removal olf the latter may produce respectively, the closing and the opening of the slot 9 in the mouthpiece.
In order to close the longitudinal slot 9 in the mouthpiece 8 when operative, it is possible to fit on the wall located adjacent said slot, a projecting ridge the outline and size of which are the same as that of said slot. When positioning the mouthpiece inside the casing 5, said mouthpiece should be angularly set in a manner such that said ridge be housed inside the slot.
Obviously, the invention is not limited to the embodi ments disclosed hereinabove and it covers all the modifications thereof falling within the scope of the accompanying claims, in particular the case where the transverse cross-section of the mouthpiece is no longer circular but of any other suitable shape and also the case where the slot instead of extending longitudinally in the wall of the mouthpiece is given a helical or the like shape and again, as mentioned, the thread may be guided only at the input of the casing by means of a guiding ring to which the invention is applicable.
Similarly, the invention does not cover only the application of a tubular mouthpiece having a discontinuous or broken peripheral Wall solely to thread twisting machines, but such a mouthpiece may be used in all machines wherein a tubular guide provided for the thread at its output has to be frequently dismantled for cleaning purposes.
What I claim is:
1. In a twisting machine including feeding means, take up means, a kiln and a twisting spindle inserted in the path of a thread between the thread feeding means and the thread take up means, the provision of a removable tubular member guiding the thread at the output of the kiln, said tubular member having a continuous openended slot formed in the wall thereof, and fixedly positioned receiving means in which one end of said tubular member is removably engaged, said slot, when said removable member is removed from said receiving means, being open to a width sufiicient to permit passage of said thread laterally out of said tubular member, said tubular member being circumferentially contracted when said one end is inserted in said receiving means whereby said slot is closed.
2. In a twisting machine including feeding means, take up means, a kiln and a twisting spindle inserted in the path of a thread between the thread feeding means and the thread take up means, the provision of a removable tubular member guiding the thread at the output of the kiln and having a helically extending open-ended slot formed in the wall of said tubular member throughout the length of the latter to allow a lateral removal of said tubular member ofi the thread extending through it without breaking said thread, said kiln comprising means for removably receiving said tubular member with said slot closed, said tubular member being formed of resilient material for causing said slot to open when said tubular member is removed from said means for removably receiving the same.
3. In a twisting machine including feeding means, take up means, a kiln and a twisting spindle inserted in the path of a thread between the thread feeding means and the thread take up means, the provision of a removable tubular member guiding the thread at the output of the kiln and having a rectilinear axially extending open-ended slot formed in the wall of said tubular member throughout the length of the latter and parallel to the longitudinal axis of said tubular member to allow a lateral removal of said tubular member off the thread extending through it without breaking said thread, said kiln comprising means for removably receiving said tubular member with said slot closed, said tubular member being formed of resilient material for causing said slot to open when said tubular member is removed from said means for removably receiving the same. 4. In a twisting machine including feeding means, take up means, a kiln and a twisting spindle inserted in the path of a thread between the thread feeding means and the thread take up means, the provision of a bipartite tube guiding the thread throughout its passage through the casing, one part of said tube including a mouthpiece axially aligned with the other part and removably fitted thereon at its output end, said one part extending through a wall of said casing and having an open-ended slot formed therein which extends through the wall of said one part throughout thelength thereof to allow a lateral removal of said mouthpiece off the thread extending through it without breaking said thread with said one part removed from said other part.
5. In a twisting machine including feeding means, take up means, a kiln and a twisting spindle serially included in the path of a thread between the thread feeding means and the thread take up means, the provision of a tubular member guiding the thread at the output of the kiln, said tubular member having a normally closed open-ended slot formed in the wall thereof and extending throughout the length of the latter to allow a lateral removal of said tubular member from the thread extending through it without breaking said thread, a further tubular member normally removably receiving one end of said first-named tubular member to maintain said slot closed, said firstnamed tubular member being biased to open said slot upon removal thereof from said further tubular member.
6. A machine according to claim 5, wherein said slot extends helically.
7. A machine according to claim 5, wherein said slot extends rectilinearly.
8. A machine according to claim 5, wherein the inner surfaces of said tubular members are substantially continuous each effectively forming an extension of the other.

Claims (1)

1. IN A TWISTING MACHINE INCLUDING FEEDING MEANS, TAKE UP MEANS, A KILN AND A TWISITING SPINDLE INSERTED IN THE PATH OF A THREAD BETWEEN THE THREAD FEEDING MEANS AND THE THREAD TAKE UP MEANS, THE PROVISION OF A REMOVABLE TUBULAR MEMBER GUIDING THE THREAD AT THE OUTPUT OF THE KILN, SAID TUBULAR MEMBER HAVING A CONTINUOUS OPENENDED SLOT FORMED IN THE WALL THEREOF, AND FIXEDLY POSITIONED RECEIVING MEANS IN WHICH ONE END OF SAID TUBULAR MEMBER IS REMOVABLY ENGAGED, SAID SLOT, WHEN SAID REMOVABLE MEMBER IS REMOVED FROM SAID RECEIVING MEANS, BEING OPEN TO A WIDTH SUFFICIENT TO PERMIT PASSAGE OF SAID THREAD LATERALLY OUT OF SAID TUBULAR MEMBER, SAID TUBULAR MEMBER BEING CIRCUMFERENTIALLY CONTRACTED WHEN SAID ONE END IS INSERTED IN SAID RECEIVING MEANS WHEREBY SAID SLOT IS CLOSED.
