Abstract

1,164,102. Producing sliver. W. H. W. SCHULLER. 16 Sept., 1966 [16 Sept., 1965], No. 41548/66. Headings DID and D1N. A sliver of roving-like character is produced by collecting and withdrawing said sliver from a stream of glass staple fibres the sliver being drawn off through a rapidly rotating tube 12 which produces a rapidly rotating air current which wraps projecting fibres about the sliver body and imparts some twist to the sliver. The staple fibres are fed into a stationary spinning tube 7 by an air current which causes the fibres in the tube to follow a rotary motion. The direction of rotation of the draw-off tube 12 may be the same or opposite to that of the direction of rotation of fibres in the spinning tube. To prevent ballooning of the sliver on leaving tube 12 it is passed through a tubular guide 15 to which a binding agent or grease may be supplied. In Fig. 2, not shown, the end of tube 12 protruding into shaft 7 is made frusto-conical and has grooves on its end to assist the fibres entering it. The end adjacent tube 12 may be mounted on tube 12 or shaft 7 and may be perforated. The "closeness" and strength of the roving can be varied by changing the inside diameter of tube 12 and by varying its penetration into shaft 7. The tube 12 may having different diameters e.g. decreasing in the outward direction or it may consist of several sections rotated separately e.g. at outwardly increasing speed. Tube 12 may be provided with perforations in the part extending into shaft 7 and there may be baffles in shaft 7 positioned adjacent the periphery of the draw-off tube.
