STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHANN FRIEDRICH AUGUST VVINKELMANN, OF SGHELL CITY, MISSOURI.
RElN HOLDER.
fiPECIFIGATIQN forming part of Letters Patent No. 314,356, dated March. 2 1885.
(No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHANN F. A. \VINKEL- MANN,-a citizen of the United States, residing at Schell City, in the county of Vernon and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in DrivingRein Holders; and I do hereby declare that the fol lowing is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
The present invention has relation to certain-new and useful improvements in driving rein holders; and it consists in the details of construction, substantially as shown in the drawing, and hereinafter described and claimed.
The accompanying drawing shows a perspective view of my improved driving rein holder, showing it connected to the dash-board of a vehicle, the holder consisting of a sta tionary plate, A, and a clamping-plate, B, hinged thereto. These plates are curved or semicircular in form, the lower plate being cast or otherwise formed at one end with a flanged extension, a, provided with holes for securing it to the dash or foot board of the vehicle by screws. This flanged extension a is cast with a block, b, for hinging thereto the clamping-plate D, so that when the plate is fastened in position a space will be left for the reins, one of them being shown at 0 held between the two plates. When thehinged clamping-plate B is, swung up out of the way, as shown in dotted lines, it is prevented from swinging too far back and straining the hinge by means of the stop 0. The inner end ofthe stationary plate A is reduced in thickness to engage with one of a series of notches, cl, on a latch, D,.hinged or otherwise suitably connected-to the inner end of the clamping-plate B. The reins are not always of a uniform thickness, and consequently it is necessary to adapt the plates of the holder to different thicknesses, and to attain this object the latch D is made with more than one notch, so that theplates can be held at the required distance from each other to hold the reins between them or to clamp the reins with any degree of pressure.
Should it be considered preferable to line the upper surface of the plate A with leather or other like material to prevent the reins from slipping, holes 6 are provided for screws or rivets as a means of fastening the lining to the plate, but the curve in both the plates is such as it is believed will securely hold the reins in position bet-ween them without danger of their slipping or pulling out, especially so when the plates can be held with any degree of pressure upon the reins by means of the series of notches in the latch.
Having now fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A driving-rein holder consisting of two curved plates hinged together, the lower or stationary plate having a flanged extension for fastening it to the dash or foot board of the vehicle, and the upper or clamping plate provided at its end with alateh adapted to engage with the lower or stationary plate to secure the two together against the reins, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. In a driving-rein holder, a lower or stationary plate provided with a flanged extension, a block, and a stop, in combination with an upper or clamping plate hinged to the block, and provided at its free end with a latch having a series of notches, said plates being curved, as shown, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
JOHANN FRIEDRICH AUGUST WINKELMANN.
