EDVARD GEORGE HARDER, OF ASI-IUELOT, NEV HAMPSHIRE.
PECIFICATION forming part cf Letters Patent No. 346,279, dated July 27, 1886.
Application filed June 7, 1886. Serial No. 204,583.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, EDWARD GEORGE HAR- DER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Ashuelot, in the county of Cheshire and State of New Hampshire, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in 'Phill-Couplings; and I do hereby declare t-hat the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure lis a perspective view of my improved thill-eoupling. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical sectional view of the same. Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view on line x .12, Fig. 2; and Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the yoke and the yielding block.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
My invent-ion has relation to that class of thill-eouplings which may be used with the coupling now in use and prevent the rattling of the thill-eye upon the coupling-bolt; and it consists in the improved construction and combination of parts of suoli a device, in which the yielding block is supported by a yoke having lips at its upper ends bearing againsthe perforated lips of the clip, as hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, the letter A indicates the axle-tree. B is the axle-iron, and O is the clip, the forward arm of which is provided with the usual perforated lips or ears, D D, through which the coupling-bolt E passes, upon which the thill-eye F is pivoted. A U-shaped yoke, G, rests with lips II, formed by the inwardly-bent upper ends of the yoke, upon the upper edges ot' the perforated ears of the clip, having perfor-ations I in the said ends registering with the perforations in the ears, and a set-screw, J, having any suitably-shaped head, K, at its lower end, fits and turns in a screw-threaded perforation, L, iny the lower central portion of the U -shaped yoke. The upper end of the screw is eentrally swiveled in a plate, M, which plate is formed with lips N at its forward and rear edges, serving to retain a yielding block, O, of rubber or similar yielding material, provided at its upper coneaved side with a metallic facing, I, with which it bears against (No model.)
the thill-eye. The yoke may be placed upon the coupling by removing the coupling-bolt and placing the lips at the ends of the yoke to rest upon the ears of the clip, whereupon the bolt may be again put in place, retaining the yoke upon the ears. Vhen now the screw is screwed up in its perforation, the yielding block will be forced with its metallic facing against the thill-eye,bearing against it and preventing it from rattling upon the coupling-bolt, and it will be seen that as the thill-eye and the coupling-bolt become worn the wear may be taken up by tightening the screw, and thus forcing the yielding block against the thill-eye. The lips at the ends of the yoke will remove the strain caused by forcing the block against the thill-eye from the bolt and placing it directly j upon the perforated ears ofthe clip, the bolt merely serving in its relation to the yoke to keep the same in place upon the ears. The metallic facing upon the yielding block will prevent wear of the block, preventing the thill-eye from splitting the block when forced against it.
It will be seen that the device may be applied to the thill-couplings generally in use without making any changes in the construetion of the coupling, and that the device will prevent rattling of the thill-eyes upon the bolts, which not only causes a disagreeable noise, but which will cause additional wear upon the eye and bolt.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- In combination with a thill-coupling of the usual construction, a U shaped yoke having its upper ends provided with inwardlybent lips resting upon the upper edges of the perforated ears ofthe coupling, and with perforatiols near the said lips for the passage of the coupling-bolt, a yielding block, a plate, anda set-screw located in the lower central portion of the U-shaped yoke, as and for the purpose shown and set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereunto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
EDWARD GEORGE IIARDER.
