COMBINED SCREEN AND STORM DOOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 313,844, dated March 17, 1885.
Application filed January 2, 1895.
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CHARLES ANDERSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Downers Grove, in the county of Du Page and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Combined Screen and Storm Doors, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to combined screen and storm doors; and it consists in a door having its panel-openings provided with screens, and also removable panels secured to the door-frame by sliding clamps,which lit in suitable mortises in the frame and operate to clamp the panels snugly to the frame. Screws inserted through slotsin the panel serve to tighten the clamps.
In the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which simi lar letters of reference indicate like parts, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a door embodying my invention, one of the removable panels being taken off. Fig. 2 is an enlarged cross-section on line 2 2 of Fig. 1, showing the clamp and means of securing the removable panel to the frame; and Fig. 3 is a back view of one of the panels in perspective.
In said drawings, A represents the doorframe, which is or may be of any suitable c011- st-ruction. B is a wire screen secured in the panel-openings on one face of the frame by moldings b, which rest on the edges of the screen and fit in the shoulder or recess 1), cut in the frame. 0 C are the removable panels, which are provided with shoulders G to fit the door-frame, and with narrow slots 0, through which are inserted the clamp-screws c, by which the clamps D are tightened and held in place. The clamps D fit in suitable recesses or mortises, d, in the inner edges of the frame. The panels are provided with square recesses or notches c opposite the mortises d in the frame, and the outer ends of the clamps or clips D are bent or provided with shoulders d, to fit in these grooves or recesses 0 which thus serve as a guide for the clamps. niit the clamps D to slide back, when the screws 0 are loosened far enough to disengage from the frame, and thus permit the panel to be removed. The recesses c" serve to prevent the clamps from turning and to guide them into the mortises when the screw is loosened and the panels are being secured.
In the summer, when the door is to be used as a screen-door, the panels Care removed by simply loosening the screws 0, when the clamps D may be slipped back sufficiently to disengage them from the mortises in the frame. When it is desired to use the door as a stormdoor, these panels are secured in place.
I hereby disclaim the devices heretofore patented to B. J. WVilliams in Letters Patent N 0. 148,793, of March 17, 1874, and to J. F. Martin in Patent No. 225,81-7, of March 28,. 1880.
I claim 1. The combined screen and storm door, consisting of the door-frame A, screens B, and removable panels 0, provided with sliding clamps D, for removably securing said panels in place, substantially as specified.
2. The combination, with door frame A, provided with mortises d, of wire screens B, removable panels 0, provided with slots 0, and sliding clamps D, provided with screws a, substantially as specified.
3. The combination, with frame A, provided with mortises d, of removable panels 0, provided with slots 0, recesses c", and shoulder 0, and clamps D,provided with shoulders or bends d, fitting in recesses c ,and screw a, substantially as specified.
4. The combination, with door-frame A, provided with shoulder 12 and mortises d, of screens B, moldings b,for securing said screens in place, removable panels 0, provided with shoulders 0, slots 0, and recesses 0 and sliding clamps D, fitting in said recesses and engaging said mortises, and provided with screws 0, substantially as specified.
