GEORGEAO. SMITH, OF ERIE, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-FOURTH TO FOREST O. PIPER, OF SAME PLACE.
WINDOW-FRAME AND SASH-GUIDE..
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 670,865, dated March 26, 1901.
Application filed August 24, 1900. Serial No. 27.895. (No model.)
To alla/hom. it r11/ty concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE O. SMITH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Erie, in the county of Erie and State of Pennsyl- Vania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in VindoW-Frames and Sash- Guides; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, forming part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in window-frames and sash-guides; and it consists, substantially, in constructing sash-carriers which embrace and are removably secured to the window-sash in such a manner that they operate as metallic Weather-strips, and at the same time the sash secured therein can be quickly removed therefrom and from the window-frames, and when desired both the sash and sash-carrier can be removed' without removing the stops from the Windowframes. These and other features of the invention are hereinafter fully set forth and described, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a view in elevation showing a window-frame and sash embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the same on the line a: a, in Fig. l. Fig. 3 is a horizontal section of the same on the line y y in Fig. l. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of a section of my improved metallic sash-carrier. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of a section of the stop upon which the sash-carrier operates.
In the drawings thus illustrating my invention, A is a window-frame provided with stops d de? and with sash-pulleys A and sash- 'weights B in the usual manner.
Fig. 2. This guide-piece E is provided on its front face with a groove e, adapted to receive a sash-cord F, secured to the sash-carrier D, as illustrated in Fig. 4. The part d of the sash-carrier D embraces the edge of the sash O and C and is secured thereto by a removable screw or stop c, so thatit can be removed and the sash-carrier released from the sash when it is desired to remove the sash from the frame.
From the description hereinbefore given it is apparent that this device can be applied to the Window-frames and sash of any ordinary window, as the strips E, upon which the sasltcarriers D slide, can be secured to the Window-frame between the stops thereon by means of screws or nails, as illustrated in Fig. 2, and the edge of the sash O or C' secured within the portion CZ/ of the sash-carrier D, so that the sash-carrier D will operate not only to retain the sash in place, but will also operate as a metallic Weathenstrip, preventing Wind or rain from entering between the sash and casing.
Having thus described my invention so as to enable others to construct and operate the same, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, 1s-
1. The combination of a guide-piece adapted to be secured to a Window-frame, with a sash-carrier, one portion of which is adapted to embrace and slide upon said guide-piece, and the other to embrace and be secured to the Window-sash, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination of a window frame and sash, a guide-piece adapted to be secured between the stops thereon, a sash-carrier one portion of which embraces and slides upon said guide-piece, and the other embracing and removably secured to the Window-sash, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
GEORGE O. SMITH.
