Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PETER A. REGNIER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kinsley, in the county of Edwards, State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Glass-Panel Fasteners; and I do declare the following to be a full,
clear, and exact description of the invention,
such as will enable others skilled in the artto which it appertains to make and use the same.
The invention relates to a panel fastener and more particularly to the class of glass pane fasteners.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of a fastener of this character in which a panel or glass pane may be securely fastened in a frame without the requirement of putty or other ordinary fastening mediums now in use, the pane being capable of ready and quick removal. from the frame when desired.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a fastener of this character in which a glass panel may be mounted within a window or door frame whereby it may be removed at will should the same become broken or otherwise unfit for use, the said pane being held fast within the frame, so as to avoid any possibility of rattling thereof.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a fastener of this character which is simple in construction, inexpensive in manufacture and that may be mounted in varying styles of window sashes or door ames.
With these and other objects in view the invention consists in the construction, combination and'arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, disclosing the preferred form of embodiment of the invention and pointed out in the claims hereunto appended.
In the drawings :Figure 1 is a side elevation of a window or door frame looking toward one face thereof and the invention applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view through the same. Fig. 3 is an enlarged transverse sectional view on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2. Fig. at is an enlarged fragmentary sectional view on the line 4.-l of Fig. 2 looking in the direction of the arrow.
Similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views in the drawings.
Referring to the drawings by numerals 5 designates generally a window or door frame having the usual vertical stiles 6 connected in any suitable manner to top and bottom rails 7 and 8, each stile and top and bottom rail being composed of front and rear sections 9 and 10, the sections 9 being wider than the sections 10 and rabbeted on their inner faces at the inner edges thereof to form a panel receiving recess 11, the said sections being united in any suitable manner. Within the channel receiving recess 11 is mounted a removable glass panel or pane 12 which is held in the said frame 5 in a manner as will be hereinafter more fully described.
Between the sections 9 and 10 of the stiles, top and bottom rails at their inner edges are formed recess or guide grooves 13 and in the groove of the bottom rail 8 is rigidly secured a metallic panel or pane engaging strip 14 the latter adapted to overlap the said panel or pane 12 for a short distance and in the grooves 13 in the vertical stiles 6 of the frame 5 are laterally shiftable panel or pane engaging strips 15 each comprising a series of diagonally disposed slots '16 engaged by guide pins 17 mounted in the front sections 9 of the stiles so that upon longitudinally shifting said strips 15 the same will be removed away from or toward the panel or pane 12 so as to release or overlap the same. By reason of the fact that the slots 16 which receive the lugs 21 are of less inclination than the slots 16 which receive the pins 17, the strip 15 will move downwardly for a greater distance than the strip 18.
In the groove 13 between the front and rear sections of the top rail 7 is disposed an adjustable or shiftable panel or pane engaging strip 18 the same being provided with vertical slots 19 engaged by guide pins 20 mounted in the front section 9 of the said top rail 7 and this strip 18 is provided with lugs 21 at opposite ends thereof which lugs engage in the slots 16 near the upper ends of the said panel or pane engaging strips 15 mounted in the vertical stiles so that on shifting the strips 15 a predetermined distance the said strip 18 will be simultaneously shifted therewith to overlap the upper edge of the panel or pane 12 or to free the same at its upper edge.
Connected near the lower ends of the strips by means of pivots 22 are links 23 the same being formed at their free ends with right angularly disposed ears 24 in which are swiveled the inner ends of threaded adjusting bolts 25 the latter threaded through guide eyes 26 fixed in the walls of suitable cavities 27 formed in the lower ends of the front sections of the stile of the frame 5 receiving the said adjusting bolts 25, the said adjusting bolts 25 being provided at their outer ends with squared terminals 28 to be engaged by a suitable clock key or other turning key (not shown), whereby the said adjusting bolts may be rotated for shifting the strips 15 and 18 for either releasing the glass panel or pane 12 or securing it in its recess 11 in the window frame.
WVhat is claimed is z- 1. The combination with a frame pro vided with an interior recess surrounding the same for receiving a member therein; of a pair of side strips having inclined slots therethrough, means carried by the frame to engage the slots and guide the strips outwardly and inwardly as the same is raised and lowered, a top strip slidably connected with the end portions of the side strips and slidably arranged in the frame for vertical movement, a stationary bottom strip and means connected with the end portions of the side strips for raising and lowering the same.
2. The combination with a frame having an open center provided with a pane receiving recess at its inner edge and a pane fitted within said recess; of a stationary plate secured to the inner edge of one side of the frame to overlap the pane, strips arranged along the other sides of the frame and having slots therethrough, pins carried by the frame and engaged in the slots, the strip opposite to the stationary strip being slidably connected to the end portions of the other strips, links pivotally connected to the other end portions of the last mentioned strips and operating screws connected with the links and projecting through one side of the frame for shifting said movable strips.
