THOMAS O. POTTER, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
SUSPENDERS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 311,917, dated February 10, 1885.
I I Application filed April 10, 1884. (No model.)
To allwfwm it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS O. POTTER, of Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, a citizen of the United States, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Suspenders, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a a part of this specification, in explaining its nature, in which Figure l is a view in elevation of suspend ers having my invention. Figs. 2 and 3 represent modifications which are hereinafter specially referred to.
The invention is an improvement upon that described in my Reissue Letters Patent No. 8,820, and it comprises specific features of construction hereinafter especially described. In said patent I describe a construction of suspenders consisting of two shoulderstraps and two cords, each of which is adapted to connect the front and back ends of the straps, and are adapted to be secured by three buttonholes, two of which are formed thereon and one of which is formed in a short cord at tached thereto. In the present invention I do not connect the back ends of the straps with the front ends of the straps, but connect the back ends of the straps to the two back and two middle buttons, each front end of the straps having but one button-hole, whereby it is secured to the front button.
Referring to the drawings, A represents one strap, B the other. They each have at their front ends, a, a hook, a, which engages with a ring or loop, (62, held upon the button-hole piece This button-hole piece may be made of cord turned back upon itself and fastened by a metal clamping-sleeve, as represented in Fig. 1, or it may be of webbing, or of any other suitable material. Each of the rear ends, 12, of the suspenders has a sheave, O, which supports the cord D, and upon which the cord renders. This cord may be made in one piece, as represented in Fig. 1, or in two pieces secured together, as represented in Fig. 2, and it or they connect together the back ends of the straps with the two side buttonholes, d cl, and two back button-holes, cl (P. The back button-holes, d d, in Fig. 1 are formed by turning the cord back upon itself, as represented, and by fastening the two portions thereof together by means of the metal clampingsleeves d. The two portions 6 e of the cord are also secured together above the button-hole-clamping sleeves by means of the clamping-sleeves 6, so that the draft of the cord shall not be from the button-holes, but from a point higherup, as I find that by this construction the back ends of the straps A B are kept more closely together. In Fig. 2, where two cords are used, they are connected together above the button-holes by the metal clamping-sleeve e Of course I may use any other clamping sleeve or device for forming the button-holes and connecting'the portions of the cord than that described herein; but I prefer to use the one herein specified, because it is cheap and effective.
The button-holes preferably are formed by returning the ends of the cord and securing them to the other continuous portion thereof by means of the meta clampingsleeves, which are like those described in my said patent.
In lieu of arranging the cords as shown in Fig. 2, the portion having the middle buttonholes, (1 d, may be made in one piece, and the part bearing the back button-holes, d d may be made in one piece and the two sections united together by a metal clamping-sleeve or other suitable device, and this form of construction is represented in Fig. 3. I
When in use, the front ends of the straps are buttoned by the button-hole pieces to the front buttons, and the rear ends are secured 1. In suspenders or braces, the combination of the straps A B, each of which has the front end, or, provided with a single button-hole, a the sheaves 0, attached to the back ends of the straps, and the cord-connection D, having the side button-holes, cl (1, and the rear buttonholes, d (1, formed with or rigidly fastened to the cord-connection D, whereby the cord-conback button=holes being connected with each nection may render or move in the sheaves other and with the cord-connection D by a without changing the relation of the back butfastening which prevents the movement of the ton-holes to said cord, all substantially as and said cord D in relation to said back button- 5 for the purposes described. I holes, all substantially as described, and for 15 2. In suspenders or shoulderbraces, th the purposes specified. straps A B, the sheaves 0, supported by the THOMAS O. POTTER. back ends of the straps, and the cord-connec- Witnesses: tion D, having the side button-holes, d d, and F. F. RAYMOND, 2d,
IO the rear or back button-holes, d d the said FRED. B. DOLAN.
