Description

vUNrTED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM JARRELL, OF TRENTON, TENNESSEE.
nvlpaovi-:MENT IN PLows.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 3l,l72, dated January 22, 1861.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM J AERELL, of Trenton, in the county of Gibson and State of Tennessee, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Plows; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specication, in Which- Figure l is a side View of the plow. Fig. 2 is a rear view. Fig. 3 is a horizontal section at m.
Similar letters of reference indicate correspondin g parts in the several tigures.
My invention consists in an improved arrangement of devices for securing theflandside.
The metallic portion of the plow is made up of a mold-board and standard, A, cast in one piece, a separate landside, B, and a share, C. The landside is secured in position by the following means:
b is a projection from the landside, extending forward on the inside and engaging under a lug, a, ou the mold-board, thus securing the landside against lateral motion outwardly,
while a shoulder, c, prevents its motion rear-` the squaring of the socket d and the end of the bolt which its into it may be dispensed with, if desired.
To secure the landside it is first placed in position and the bolt c then inserted, lirst in the socket f and next in the socket d, and the nut g turned firmly against the face of the socket f.
The left handle I is bolted to the landside B and beam K in customary manner.
The provision for attaching the right handle J is as follows:
j is a loop, cast on the inside of the moldboard to receive the lower end of the handle.
k is an ear, cast upon and projecting upward from the upper corner of the mold-board, soinewhat in the rear of the working-face, and in a suitable position for the handle J to lie against its inner face. A square hole is cast in the ear 7c to receive a bolt, which passes through the handle and is secured by a nut, Z.
The benetits'of this device are ease of casting and the great facility afforded for applying the bolt and nut without passing the former through the working-face 0f the moldboard.
I am aware that a plow-handle has been previously secured by 'means of bolts passing through lugs on the inside of the mold-board, and do not wish to be understood as claiming such, a distinguishing feature of my invention being that the ear to which the handle is secured projects upward, so as to permit the insertion of the bolt without difficulty, at the same time that it is kept clear of the workingfaee of the mold-board.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination ofthe landside B, sockets I andf, bolt e, and nutg, constructed, arranged, and operating in the manner and for the purposes set forth.
The above specification of my improvements in plows signed this 28th day of November, 1860.
Witnesses: WILLIAM JARRELL.
