Description
G., W. DEPEW Plow-Glens.
Patei ited Mar. 19, 1861;
HER, WASHINGTON D C UNITED STATES PATENT ()EEIcE.
GEORGE W. DEPEW, OF PEEKSKILL, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR TO HORTON,
IM PROVEM ENT lN PLOWS.
Specification forming part. of Letters Patent No. 31,761, dated March 19, 1861.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE W. DEPEW, of Peekskill, in the county of Westchester and State of New York, have invented a new and useful improvement in Plow-Olevises; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of thesame, reference being bad to the annexed drawings, making a part ofthis specification, in which- Figure 1 is a side View of a plow provided with my improvement; Fig. 2, a section of the same, taken in the line 00 m, Fig. 3; Fig. 3, a plan or top view of the same; Fig. at, a section of the same, taken in the line yy, Fig. 2.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
The object of this invention is to obtain a clevis that may be very readily adjusted on the end of the plow-beam, so that the plow may have more or less pitch to plow deep or shallow, as may be required, the clevis at thesame time being attached or connected to the plowbeam in such a manner asto preclude thepossibility ofits casual detachment.
To enable those skilled in the art to fully understand and construct my invention, 1 will proceed to describe it.
A represents aplow-beam, which is of curved form and provided atits upper and loweredges with flanges a a, which project out from each side of the beam, so as to leave a groove or concave, b, at each side, as shown clearly in Fig. 4. The beam is ofcast-iron, and its npperflange a terminates at the back part of the beam, as shown at c in Fig. 1.
The front end of the beam A is inclined, as shown clearly at a in Figs. 1 and 2, and at each side of the beam, at its front part, there are notches c, which may be described as being in ledges f, which form the front ends of the grooves or concaves b b, and connect the front ends of the flanges a a. Three notches, e, are shown at each side of the beam A; but more or less may be used, as desired. The notches e at each side of the beam are in lines parallel with theinclined end a of the beam,as shown clearly in Figsland 2. The beam with its flanges a a and edges f are all cast in one piece.
B represents the clevis, which may be of cast-iron. This clevis is of flat form, and has three holes, 9.9 g, in it at its front part, any of which may receive the draft-hook. (See Fig. 3.) Theholes g g g are in a line aboutat right angles with the plow-beam. The back part of the clevis is provided with a square or rectangularrecess,c, which forms two prongs or arms, h 71.,from the inner sides of which, and near their ends, pinst' t'projeet at right angles,
one from each arm. The space between the,
ends of the pins Mis narrower than the flanges a a, and the clevis is fitted on the beam by placing it over the back part behind theupper flange, a, at c, and then shoving the clevis forward to the front end of the beam.
The flanges a a, it will be seen, prevent the casual detachment of the clevis from the beam, as the pins 2' 6 project within the grooves 11, as shown clearly in Fig. 4.
The pins z' i of the clevis may be fitted in any one of the notches 6, according to the degree of pitch it is necessary to give the plow. it deep plowing is required, the pins i are. adjusted in the upper notches, the pitch being decreased by adjusting the pins in; the lower notches. against the inclined front end, a, ofthe beam A, and said end a, in connection with thepins it and notches e c, retain the clevis in the desired position.
It will be seen from the above position that it is essential that the end a of the beam and the notches e at each side of the beam be in parallel inclined lines' or planes in order to effect the result described.
In order to give theplow land the draft-hook is adjusted in the extreme right-hand hole, 9', a straightor direct draft being obtained by adjusting the draft-hook in the central hole, g. A drai'ttendency from the land is obtained by adjusting the drafahook in the hole g.
I do not claim broadly or separately aclevis provided with a series of holes or notches, for they have been previously used 5 but I do claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- Aelevis, B, provided with arms h h, which have pins ii projecting therefrom, in connection with a plow-beam, A, having flanges a a at its'upper and lower edges, and provided with an inclined front end, a, and notchesee, all arranged as and for the purpose set forth.
GEORGE W. DEPEW.
