' DBTAGHABLE BOSOM.
' INVENTOR:
BY MM ATTORNEYS.
NITED STATES PATENT Fries.
GEORGE \V. LEE, OF RIDGE\VOOD, NE\V YORK.
DETACHABLE BOSOM.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 310,691, dated January 13,1885.
Applicziiion filed April 23, 1984.
.To (0% whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE 'W. LEE, ol' ltidgewood, in the county of Queens and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Detachable Bosom, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to that class of shirt bosoms which are worn on woolen or other shirts, or over ordinary dress-sl1irts in case the bosom fixed in the shirt is soiled.
The object of my invention is to insure a good fit of the detachable bosom, and to hold the cape properly on the said bosom without affecting or displacing the article by the shoulder motions of the wearer.
The invention consists in a detachable bosom made up of a bosom and neckband, to which is attached an encircling lower cape that incloses the neckband,'and which is extended downward along the margins of the bosom, said cape uniting with the bosom at its upper corners and extending for a uniform deptlnor nearly so, around the sides and back of the neck, and resting on said sides and back, but not extending to the shoulders. This cape is composed of wings eonnect-ing'where they inclose the neekband with the upper corners of the bosom.
The invention differs from other adjustable shirt-bosoms constructed to extend around the neckband on each side of the shoulder, and cnlarged near the neckband to form a substitute for the yoke or shoulder plait; also, from other bosoms having concave side pieces constructed to extend under the arms and partly around the bodyof the wearer, and having independent yokcs reaching to or covering the shoulders, and cords uniting the opposite side pieces. The difference between these inventions and mine is important, as in no case do the wings in my bosom, which form the lower cape, serve as a yoke or substitute for the ordinary yoke or shoulder plait, but they simply hug or fit the sides and back of the neck as a perfect cape free from interference by the shoulder motion of the wearer, thus keeping the bosom and collar in place.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures.
Figure 1 is a rear perspective viewot the (Model.)
upper part of my improved bosom, showing the manner in which it is worn and adjusted.
Fig. 2 is a front view of myimproved bosom.
Fig. 3 is a front View of a modification of my improy ed bosom.
The bosom A, made of muslin or other suitable material, is secured on a backing, B, pro vided at its top with two wings, O, forming a cape at the upper corners of the bosom. The outer edge of said cape is constructed on the are of a circle larger than that described by the outer edge of the shirt-bosom. A neck band, I), is secured to the upper end of the bosom A and along the inner edges of the wings or cape (J, which neckband is provided with a button-hole, a, at the middle and with a button-hole, b, in each end. In the outer or lower corner of one wing G a button-hole, d, is made, and in the outer or lower corner of the other wing O a button, E, is sewed on the upper surface of the wing. The bosom is provided at its lower end with tab F,which, however, may be omitted. The wings G can be formed in one, with the bosom A sewed to the same, and the backing B can be dispensed with. In wearing the bosoms, the wings O, of uniform or nearly uniform depth where attached to the neckband, and forming a pendent cape hugging the sides and back of the neck, but notextendin g out to the shoulders, are adjusted to their place in such a manner that their ends come together on the back directly below the neck. The front collarbutton or stud is passed through the shirt, the button-hole ain the neckband D of the bosom, and through the buttonholes in the ends of the independent collar to be attached. The rear collar-button is passed through the button-hole in the neckband of the shirt, through the button-holes b in the ends of the neckband D, and through the rear blitton-hole in the collar. The button E on one wing Got the bosom is passed through the button-hole d in the other wing 0, thus uniting the ends of the wings at the lower or outer corners, the upper or inner corners, which are at the ends of the neckband D, being held together by the rear collar-button. The lower attached cape,
formed by the wings O, by hugging the sides and back of the neck only, gives an excellent fit, and the bosom is not liable to be shifted or displaced, or the outside or independent collar to be disturbed from its proper place on the throat and bosom by the shoulder niotion of the wearer.
In the construction shown in Fig. 3, the wings O, forming the cape, are united at the rear, and the collar-band, instead of being opened at the rear, is opened at the front. In this case the bosom is held on the shirt by means of the front collar-button, which is A detachable bosom made as herein shown and described, consisting of an ordinary bosom and neckband, D, and alower encircling-cape, C, secured to the base of the neckband and eX- tending downward along the margins of the bosom, the outer edge of said cape being constructed on an arc of a circle greater than that described by the outer edge of the bosom, whereby said cape will rest at the back of the neck of the wearer and also at the sides thereof, at such a distance from the shoulders as to be unaffected by the shoulder motions of the 30 wearer, substantially as set forth.
