To all whom it muy concern,

Be it known that I, ANDREW A. SorrnrDLnn, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Cuspidor; Stand, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description. i

The object of ,my invention is to provide a new and improved cuspidor-stand which is useful and ornamental, and entirely conceals the receptacle for receiving the expeetorations.

The invention consists in the combination, with a box containing a drawer and having a hinged cover, of a standard havinga verti` cally-movable rod for swinging up the cover.

The invention further consists in a cup held on the standard, and a tube leadingfrom the cup to the drawer.

The invention also consists in a sand-box and a tube for conducting the sand to .the drawer, which sand-box can be -operated by hand or automatically by the same vertical and also in parts and details and combinations of the same, as will be set forth hereinafter.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this speciication, in .which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the gures.

A box,A, containing a drawer, B, and having a hinged cover, C, is provided with a hollouT standard, D, having an ornamental top, E, in which a mirror, EQ is held. On the matches, 85e., are held, and on the front of the standard a cup, G, is held near the top, from which cupG a tube, H, extends down into the box A, the lower end of the tube H being above the inner end of the drawer. A curved arln, I, projects from the rear part of the hinged cover C through a notch, C', in the lower part of the front of the standard D, and on the inner end of the said arm a roller, J,

The saudreceptacle is formed of two troughs, L and M, secured on a plate, N, one being arranged above the other, and each being provided in its bottoni with a longitudinal slot or other openings, m. `A hopper or funnel, O, is held below the lowest trough, and has a neck, O', which is connected by a suitable piece of tubing, O2, with the tube H, extending down into the drawer. Below each trough or box L and M a segmental gate, L and M, respectively, is held to swing, the gates being provided with end pieces, l? and Q, pivoted on the ends of the trough. The said end pieces, P and Q, are connected by a rod or bar, B, and the top piece, l?, is provided with a handle, R.

The sandbox is hung on a hook, s, on theA back of the standard D. A connectingrod, T, is pivoted to an arm, T', projecting from the upper end of the rod K, andthrough a slot in the rear of the standard, and the upper end of the rod T is connected with the handle B. If the rod K is pressed down, the cover C is swung up by the action of the rod K on the arm I. As soon as the rod K is released, the cover C swings down, and thus hides the drawer B and its contents from view. Cigar-ashes, 8vo., are dropped into the cup G, and slide from the same through the tube H into the drawer. The drawer contains sand, sawdust, or like material. The drawer can easily be removed for cleaning it, Ste. If the expectorations, die., in the box are to be covered with sand, the rod T is connected with the handle B', so that when the rod K is forced downward the handle R will be swung downward, whereby the gate L of the top box or trough, L, will be opened, and the lower box or trough will be closed. Sand, Src., is contained in the top box, and passes through the opening in the bottom of the sand-box into the box M. The handle of the sand-box may be operated by hand independently of the rod K and cover G. When the rod K and handleR are released, the gate L swings under the top trough or box and closes the same, and the bottom gate, M', swings from under the box M, and thus permits the sand, che., to slide down the tube H and upon the matter in the drawer. By a short and quick depression of the handle R, suiicient sand, the., is permitted to pass through the tube H upon the phlegln or other expectoration to cover the saine.

The sand-box may or may not be used, as niay be desired.

In sick-chambers, 85o., the sand may be mixed with any disinfectant.

Having thus described my invention, I claini as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentl. The combination, with the box A, of the drawer B, the hinged cover C, having an arm, I, the standard D, and the vertically-movable rod K in the standard, substantially as herein shown and described.

2. The combination, with the box A, of the drawer B, the standard D, the cup G, and the tube H, extending from the cup down to the drawer, substantially as herein shown and described.

3. The combination, with the box A, of the drawer B, the standard D, the oups F and G, and the tube H, extending from the cup G to the drawer, substantially as hereinshown and described.

4. The combination, with the box A, of the drawer B, the' standard D, a sand-box adapted to be hold on the standard, and a tubo for conducting` the sand and other material from the sand-box into the drawer, substantially as boXes L and M, having openings in the bottom, of the gates L and M', for closing the said openings, and of a rod for connecting the gates, substantially as herein shown and described.

6. The' combination, with the boxes or troughs Land M, having openings in the bottom, of the swinging gates L and M, the rod R, and the handle R', substantially as herein shown and described.

7. The combination, with the boxes or troughs L and M, ofthe hopper O, the swinging gates L and M', the rod R, and the handie R', substantially as herein shown and described.
