To all whom it may concern:

Be itcknown that I, CHRISTIAN MEssNnR, a citizen of the United States, residing at I'Iibbing, in the county of St. Louis and State of Minnesota, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Measures, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates generally to measures and more particularly to a dry measure although the principle thereof could be utilized in connection with liquid measures.

The object of my invention is to provide a measure for such articles as potatoes and the like which measures are usually bushel measures and heretofore considerable difliculty has been experienced in transferring the potatoes or other articles from the measure to a sack or bag. My invention is there fore to provide not only a measure but also a delivery chute whereby the measured con tents can be quickly and easily discharged into a sack or bag.

With these objects in view my invention consists essentially in providing an open ended box or receptacle having a pivoted partition which when closed provides the fourth side of the measure, and which when opened or thrown up permits the measured contents to pass from the measurethrough the chute into the bag or sack.

The invention consists also in providing a spring actuated catch for normally holding the pivoted partition in its closed position.

The invention consists also in certain details of construction hereinafter fully described and pointed out in the claims.

In the drawings forming a part of this specification: Figure 1 is a perspective view of a measure constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view of the same. Fig. 3 is a top plan view.

I11 carrying out my invention I employ an open ended box A, comprising the bottom A, rear-end A and sides A said sides A being cutaway upon their upper corners as shown at A in order to provide a contracted mouth or spout for the box or receptacle. A partition B is pivoted between the sides A as shown, said partition being provided with pivot pintles B, but if desired a sectional pivot member can extend entirely across and the partition can be connected thereto in any suitable manner. This partition B is adapted to form the fourth side of the measure, and consequently it will be so placed with reference to the end A as to provide a measuring compartment of defi-.

nite size, that is the partition will be so arranged as to provide a bushel or other measure according to the relative sizes of the sides, end and bottom constituting the receptacle. This partition B- swings outwardly toward the open end for the purpose of discharging the measured contents into the chute like end of the receptacle and in order to hold the partition in its closed position I employ a spring catch C having its handle C at its upper end, the lower end C being adapted to pass through an opening or socket formed in the bottom of the receptacle and suitable guiding eyes C are arranged upon the'partition and. a coiled spring C surrounds the catch for the purpose of normally throwing the same into engagement with the opening or socket in the bottom of the receptacle. Bobs or pins D are preferably arranged upon the sides of the spout so that the mouth of a bag or sack can be fastened thereon to facilitate the emptying of the measure. Handles E are fastened to the sides of the measure and a handle F is preferably arranged upon the rear end A said handles being of any preferred construction. r

In operation the partition is locked as shown in the drawings and the material to be measured is placed within the receptacle and when the measuring operation has been completed the spring catch is pulled up releasing the partition which swings outwardly or forwardlydelivering the measured contents into the chute and a bag or sack having been previously fastened upon the contracted mouth the contents will be quickly and easily guided into the said sack or bag. It will thus be seen that I provide an exceedingly cheap, simple and eflicientconstruction of measure capable of carrying out all of the objects hereinbefore referred to.

' What I claim is 1. A measure comprising areceptacle open at one end and having its sides cut away at said end, a partition pivoted between the sides adjacent said cut away ends and a spring catch carried by said partition for the purpose specified.
