` HALTER.
(No Model.)
No. 302,222. Patented July l5, 1884.
W lm@ M UNITED STAT-'ns PATENT OFFicE.
ROGER MELLING, OF WASHINGTON, DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA.
HALTER. y
SPECIEICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 302,222, dated July 15,1884.
Application filed June 23,4 1884.
which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the'accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to halters; and it consists in certain improvements in the construction of the same, having for their object to produce an inexpensive, durable, and efflcient device, as will be hereinafter fully de scribed, and particularly pointed out in the claim. Y
In the drawings hereto annexed, Figure l is a perspective View of my improved halter,
. and Fig. 21's a detail view.
The same letters refer to the same parts in both iigures. y
A in the drawings designates the headstall,
VB the throat-latch, C C the cheek-straps, and
D the nose strap, of my improved halter. The upper ends of the cheek-straps are connected with the ends ofthe throat-latch by means of metallic angle-plates, which consist of substantially X-shaped plates, which are bent or doubled so as to form clamps-E, each of which is provided with two pairs of arms, F and G, extending atan angle to each other, as will beseen in the drawings. Between the arms F the ends of the throat-latch are inserted .and secured by rivets I-I. Between the arms G the upper ends ofthe cheek-straps arfx inserted and likewise secured. In the upper doubled ends of the clamps E rings I are placed, the lower sides` of which are flattened, so as to prevent undue strain upon the clamps, and to enable the `latter to work freely upon the said rings. The upper sides of the rings I are likewise flattened to receive the Hat U-shaped metal straps or clamps J and K. Inthe former of these the head-stall strap A is riveted, and in the latter a strap, L, carrying the buckle M, is likewise secured. To the lower ends of the cheek-straps the nosestrap is secured by means of metallic clamps N, the construction of which is exactly like that 4of the clamps E, with the exception that their arms O and l? (No model.)
`are at right angles to each other, while the arms F and G of the clamps E are at an acute angle to each other. This of course is only inorder to give the proper shape to the halter. The lower ends of the cheek-straps are riveted between the arms O, and the ends of the nosestraps between thearms I?, as shown. In the doubled ends of the clamps N Vrings Q are placed, the bearings of which are flattened in the same manner and for the same purpose as the rings I, above described.' The sides of- 6o said rings are likewise flattened to receive the flat U -shaped clamps It, in which the ends of the strap S, passing around the jaw, are riveted. Said strap has a ring, T, which is connected with the throat-latch by a coupling, U, and to which the tie-strap V is secured by a U-sliaped clamp, W.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the drawings hereto annexed, the operation and advantagesof my invention will be readily understood. By my improvements stitching is entirelyvdispensed with in the manufacture of the halter. By the metallic clamping or connecting plates great strength and durability are insured.
The appearance of my improved halter is neat and attractive, there are no seams to gall and injure the horse, and 'it may be manufactured easily and ata small cost.
I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- The herein-described improved halter, complates bent or doubled, so as to form two pairs of arms extending at an angle to each other, the fiatsided connecting-rings I and Q, the straps A, L, and S, buckle M, and the flat U.shaped clamping-plates J, K, and R, all combined and operating substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ROGER MELLING. Vitnesses:
GHAs. MCG. CHAPMAN, D. P. Cown.
