S PECIPICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 296,701, dated April 8, 1884. Application filed March 5, 1884. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, PHILIP LYON and Josnrn H. Bossnnn, citizens of the United States, residing at East Stroudsburg, in the county of Monroe and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fruit-Jar-Gover Fastenings; and we do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains tomake and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

This invention has relation to fastenings for securing the covers of fruit-preserving jars in position; and it consists in the construction and novel arrangement of a transverse clamping-bar having a central projection, and a central threaded perforation. extending through said projection, and, engaging said perforation, a set-screw having a flattened expanded foot, formed with operating-lugs on its marginal portion, all as hereinafter set forth.
In the accompanying drawings, the letter A designates ajar having an exterior head or collar, 12, around its neck, and (J represents the cover which is to be fastened to the jar, a packing, d. of rubber, being usually placed between the edge of the cover and the upper shoulder of the collar-head b.
D represents a transverse clampbar having downwardly-extending ends, E E, each of which terminates in an inwardly-turned catch end, g, which, when said clamp-bar is in position across the top of the cover, is designed to engage the under shoulder of the collar [2 of the jar.
On the under side of the clamp-bar, at, its middle portion, is raised a boss or projection,

of which it forms a part.
Engaging the perforation k is a set-screw, L, which is operated by means of an expanded foot, m. This foot is broad and fiat, and is usually slightly rounded in convex form on the under side, as shown in the drawings. It is usually made in rectangular form, and is provided with'the operatinglu gs 2, which project outward from its margin.
WVhen the clamp is in position across the top of the cover, its catch ends engaging the collar of the jar, the set-screw is readily turned by means of its broad foot, which is at the same time. by the action of the screw-stein in the threaded perforation of the clamp-bar, brought to bear' precisely upon the central portion of the cover, forcing it tightly down upon the shoulder of the collar or upon the packing thereon.
Having described this invention, what we claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s
1. A fastening for jar-covers, consisting of a transverse clamping-bar having a central projection, and a threaded perforation extending through said projection, and, engaging said perforation, a set-screw having a flattened expanded foot, formed with operating-lugs on its marginal portion, substantially as speciiied.
2. The transverse clamp-bar having downwardly extending arms formed with catch ends, and a central threaded perforation, and, engaging said perforation, a set-screw having a flattened convex bottom foot, formed with marginal operating-lugs, substantially as specified.
