Description

i w; W11. CLARKE.
BJTTLE STOPPER. No. 314,110. Patented Mar. 17, 1885.
(No Model.)
741227286666. Invefior I wzlzamizazafia UNITED STATES WILLIAM H. CLARKE, OF OLEAN, NEW YORK.
BOTTLE-STOPPER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 314,110, dated March 17, 1885.
Applioaiion filed January 16, 1885.
1'0 all whom, 226 may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. CLARKE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Olean,
Oattaraugus county, New York, have inventv the purpose thereof is to provide devices for .usually formed upon all bottles.
permanently attaching the stopper to the bottle and for clamping the same in place, the
clamping-lever having a double bearing upon the stopper or plug and being guided by the bail or yoke to which it is pivoted or upon which it is supported, whereby the bail prevents the lever from being forced sidewise,
guides it into proper position relatively to the stopper, and gives the lever a broad contact upon the latter.
My invention consists in the several novel features of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter fully set forth, and definitely pointed out in the claims.
Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 is avertical central section taken through the stopper and lever. Fig. 2 is a sidc elevation of the bail and stopper, thelever being detached. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the cam'lever.
In the said drawings, therefcrence numeral 1 denotes the bottle-neck having the head, 2, Upon this head is mounted a yoke or bail, 3, hooking under the head or connected therewith in any suitable manner. This bail is carried above the top of the neck 1, and provided with a central eye, 4,which may be formed by a loop in the wire or by a separate device. In this loop or eye 4 is pivotally mounted a cam-lever, 5, having two parallel branches or forks, 6, one lying upon each side of the bail. The lever is attached to the loop by apivot-pin, 7, passing through said loop and through both forks 6 of the lever. A back orstrip, 8, is
mounted upon the parallel plates 6 and prolonged beyond their lower ends to form a thumb-piece, 9.
(No model) The stopper-1O is formed of rubber, cork,or other suitable material, and provided with a cap, 11, of metal, wood, or other substance, having opposite lugs or cars, 12, which are perforated to receive the bail, the construction being such that the stopper will readily move up or down upon the bail or yoke, but is not easily detached therefrom,
In use the lever 5 is thrown down until the thumb-piece 9 lies upon one part of the bail. In this position it firmly holds the stopper in place, the two parallel plates 6 of the lever having contact with the capplate 11 upon each side of its central point, and thereby holding it securely in place. The cam is guided by the bail into proper position upon and engagement with the stopper by means of the parallel plates of said lever, which lie upon each side of the bail, as shown.
This forms a strong, cheap, efiicient, and easily-operated device, and one wherein the stopper and its parts are all connected together.
WVhat I claim is 1. In a bottle-stopper, the combination, with a bail or yoketo whichtbc stopper is inovably connected, of a cam-lever pivotally mounted upon said yoke, and having parallel plates, which lie upon each side of and are guided by the bail, substantially as described.
2. In abot-tle-stop per, the con1bination,with a bail or yoke having a central eye, in which is pivoted a cam-lever having two parallel plates lying upon each side of said bail, and a stopper havingperforated lugs or cars, which engage with the bail, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signaturein presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM H. CLARKE.
