BOX.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 641,144, dated January 9, 1 900.
Application filed October 14, 1 8 9 9.
To (4% whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOSEPH V. OTTEN, of Iola, in the county of Allen and State of Kansas, have invented a new and Improved Box, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates particularly to covers and means for attaching the same to boxes designed to hold bottles of carbonated beverages or the like; and the object is to provide a cover with a simple means for attaching it to a box, so that it may be easily and quickly removed and replaced.
I will describe a box embodying my invention and then point out the novel features in the appended claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure l is a top plan view of a box em bodying my invention. Fig.2 is a section on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 is a side view showing the cover in position to be removed.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates a box, here shown as having a central vertical partition 2; but this partition may be omitted without departing from my invention.
The cover consists of two sections 3 4:, connected together at their inner or adjacent ends by means of coiled springs 5, the central portions 6 of the springs being seated in recesses formed in the top of the section 4 of the cover and held in place by means of a cleat 7, secured to the top of the cover-section. The ends 8 of the springs are seated in recesses formed in the cover-section 3 and .held in place by a cleat 9, secured to said move 1 it of the hooks or lugs the upper serial No. 733,612. (No model.)
ends are turned upward to engage in the cleats, as clearly indicated in Fig. 2.
In placing the cover on a box the horizontal portions of the lugs or hooks at one end of the cover are to be placed in the perforations 11, adapted to receive them. Then by moving the central portions of the cover-sections upward, as indicated in Fig. 3, the opposite end lugs or hooks may be directed into the perforations in the box made to receive them. Then by forcing the inner ends of the coversections downward the horizontal portions of the lugs or hooks will be'forced into the per forations. When the two sections of the cover are in horizontal position, as indicated in Fig. 2, the springs will cause them to remain in this position, because the tendency of said springs is to force the inner ends of the cover sections downward.
The horizontal portions of the hooks by engaging against the walls of the perforations 11 will prevent any downward movement, even if the partition 2 were omitted; but when this partition is employed the lower sides of the spring-coils will rest upon the upper edge of said partition.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The combination with abox, of a cover consisting of two sections having spring connection at their inner or adjacent ends, and devices carried on the outer ends of said sections for engaging with the body of the box, substantially as specified.
2. The combination with a box, of a cover therefor consisting of two sections, springs connecting the inner or adjacent ends of said sections, and lugs on the outer ends of the sections to engage in perforations formed in upright portions of the box, substantially as specified.
3. The combination with a box, of a cover consisting of two sections, coiled springs connecting the two sections at their adjacent ends, the central portions of the springs being connected to one of the cover-sections and the ends of said springs being connected to the other cover-section, and lugs or hooks at tached to the outer ends of the cover-sections and adapted to engage in perforations formed cal portions passed into slots formed in the in upright portions of the box, substantially v sections and having their upper ends turned [0 as specified. downward upon the sections and secured by 4. The combination with a boX, of a cover cleats, substantially as specified. 5 consisting of two sections, spring connections JOSEPH V. OTTEN.
between the adjacent ends of said sections, Witnesses: and lugs or hooks on the outer ends of said J. F. SCOTT, sections, the said lugs or hooks having verti- JOHN A. PORTER.
