. lowing specification and represented inthe accompanying drawings, of which Figurelis a front view, Fig. 2 aside elevation, Fig. 3 a longitudinal section, and Fig. 4 a transverse section, of a shaft-supporter of my improved kind. Figs. 5 and 6 are opposite side views of one of the metallic body parts B B, to be hereinafter described.

The inventton relates to the kind of carriage-shaft supporters described and represented in the United States Patent num- 4 bered 199,148, granted to me January 15, 1878. In my present shaft supporter, the leather annular packing'A has its opposite edges in grooves a a in the two next adjacent metallic body parts B B, which, formed as represented, are connected by four screws, 0, D, E, and F, going through one of such parts andscrewed into the other, so as to draw them closely against the packing between them and with the grooves to hold it firmly in place. Each of the said parts B and B is composed not ner side, as shown at a in Fig. 4, but of two arms or projections, one of which extends upward and the other downward from it, as represented, they being in one piece with the ring.

as shown in Figs. 5 and 6, such eyes being to support and receive a loop, I, of leather, extended through them, as represented, and fastened to the ring of packing by rivets, tacks, or other suitable means. This loop is to receive a strap depending from the saddle of the harness and buckled into the upper part of the supporter. A metallic tube or frictionroller, (1, encompasses that part of the shank of each of the screws 0 and F which is between the two parts B B, such roller being free to revolve on such shank. The lower roller is to support the saddle-girth arranged to extend between the lower portions of said parts B B. By having the buckle-tongue instead of a bridge and stud and a metallic loop fastened to the two metallic parts of the supporter, as in that shown in my said patent, I am enabled to draw such parts, by their screws, closer upon the packing, and thereby-better hold it in place, it being in practice, as I have found, apt to work loose or get out of place when the supporter is made as represented in such patent.

I do not claim a thill-tug constructed as .shown in the United States Patent No. 47 ,903,

in which the leather packing is covered on its outer surface by its holding-rings, and such rings have no eyes extending from them to receive a leather loop going through them and fastened to the packing; as is the casein my thi1l- Furthermore, the said patented thill-tug has a buckle pivoted at its middle to the rings of the said tug, whereas in my supporter I have no such buckle, but simply have rigid proj ections-from the rings and four screws to go through such projections; and on one of such screws I have a buckle-tongue, to extend therefrom to another of such screws. In the United States Patent No. 199,148, hereinbefore mentioned, the rings for supporting the packing are, like those in the Patent No. 47 ,903, connected by two screws only, whereas four screws are necessary to the connection of the parts B B of my thill-supporter. Y

I claim 1. -The shaft-supporter having its metallic parts BB provided with grooves to receive the edge of the packing and connected by screws arranged in them, the said parts, in combina- ICO the rings of such parts, with its inner and outer peripheries essentially even or flush with the next contiguous surfaces of such rings, all substantially as set forth.

2. The shaft-supporter composed of the two grooved metallic parts B B, the leather packing A, and their connection-screws 0,,D, E, and F, a buckling-tongue, G, adapted to two of the screws, and abuckling-loop,1, of leather or other suitable material, arranged in eyes, 10 extended from the said two parts and connected to the packing between them, as specified.
