I UNITED STATES HENRY J. FROST, JR,

S HAFT- LO O P.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 273,505, dated March 6, 1883. Application filed January 12, 1883. (No model.)
To an whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY J. FROST, Jr., of Wooster, in the county of. Wayne and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Shaft-Loops; and Ido hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a side view; Fig. 2, a section, and Fig. 3 a section taken through the metal frame. Fig.4 is an edge view of the shaftloop.
My invention relates to shaft-loops that have a metal frame with a leather lining and a. leather strap around the exterior; and it consists in the peculiar construction of the metal frame, and its'combination with the external leather strap and the inner facing of leather, as will be hereinafter fully described.
In the drawings, A represents arigid metal frame, which in general outline is of an oval shape, and at its edges is provided with flanges a a. and b 1), two of which,a a, project outwardly to form a peripheral groove for the outer strap, B, and the other two of which, I) 1), project inwardly and form an inner groove or recess for the inner leather or rubber facing, O.
In the upper end of the metal frame A is formed an open seat, 0, for the buckle D, in which seat said buckle is firmlyheld by the leather strap B. which rests in the external groove of the, frame, and the ends of which strap are fastened at the lower side of the metal frame, as follows: At the lower side of the said frame there is formed a tapering throat or hollow tail-piece, (1, into which both ends of the external strap, B, are passed and there retained by a screw or rivet, e, passing transversely through the tapering throat, one end of saidstrap being extended through the throat 11, so as to form a connection for the belly-band.
The inner leatheror rubber facingis seated in the inner groove of the metal frame,which is of a dovetail shape, and is held in place by rivetsff, one of which extends entirely through the metal frame and external strap and holds the latter down tightly at a point near the buckle to prevent the latter from rising from its seat.
By means of my invention a strong and durable shaft-loop is provided, and one in which the inner facingof leather and outer strap may be removed and replaced when worn out.
I do not confine myself to making the frame A of metal, but may use hard rubber or other suitable material.
I am aware that a shaft-loop consisting of a metalframe lined both inside and out with leather is not new, and I do not claim the same, broadly.
The principal feature of novelty in my invention is the rigid frame A, formed with tapered throat (I, which, with its rivet or screw;
forms an efficient means for holding the two ends of the outer strn p and connecting the shaft-loop with the belly-band.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new is 1. The rigid frame A, formed with tapered throat (I, substantially as and for the purpose described.
2. The combination, with the strap B, hold ing the buckle, of the rigid frame A, formed with a hollow tapered throat, (I, at the bottom, into which the ends of said strap are passed and secured by a screw or rivet, substantially as described.
3. The combination, with the inner lining, O, and the outer strap,B, carrying'the buckle, of the frame A, having open buckle-seat cand tapered throat d, and a screw or rivet securing the ends of the strap in said throat, substantially as described.
HENRY J. FROST, JR.
