P. DAVIS. HARNESS HAME ATTACHMENT.
(Application filed May 57', 1897.)

IN VENTOR W/TNESSES .ZZP. Jaw/a8 llnrrnn STATES IsAAo POLK DAvis, OF nUNeERF oRD, TEXAS.
HARNESS-HAM E ATTACHMENT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 610,125, dated August 30, 1898.
Application filed May 2'7, 1897.
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, IsAAc POLK DAvis, of llungerford, in the county of Wharton and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Harness-flames; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to harness-hames; and it consists of the construction and arrangement of the several parts, which will be more fully hereinafter described and claimed.
The object of the invention is to providea hame of a strong and durable construction, simple in its arrangement, and having means of ready application of the necessary devices used in connection with harness attachments. In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a hame embodying the invention. Fig. 2 is a section on the line mm, Fig. 1. one of the attachments. Fig. 4 is a similar view of another of the attachments.
Referring to the drawings, wherein similar numerals of reference are employed to indicate corresponding parts in the several views, the numeral 1 designates a hame which is preferably constructed of wood and has an inner curved contour to properly lie against the body of the animal to which it is applied and which is a well-known construction. The lower end is slightly flattened, as at 2that is,the thickness is reduced-which is also well known in the art, and for the purpose of dispensing with the use of a collar the outer face of each hame is flat, as at 3, with a rise or elevation 4 near the lower portion thereof and situated about two-thirds of the length of the hame as an entirety from the top thereof. Mounted on the enlargement4 is a fastening 5, consisting of a base-plate havingan outwardly-projecting inwar'dly-extend ing hook 6, formed with an arrow-head 7, the.
latter being slightly inclined inward toward the base-plate and is adapted to be used for.
the attachment of the trace-chains. At the Fig. 3 is a-detail perspective View of Serial No- 638A'78. (No model.)
outline, and the groove 11 therein forming a seat for a staple 12, which is driven through the openings 13 through the plate 5 on opposite sides of the lug and with the said concavities 9 forming spaces for the attachment of ordinary devices and especially for a ring 4, to which the front parts of the harness are secured. By covering the head of the lug, as set forth,-the formation of an interfering projection is avoided and the parts of harness moving thereover will not be caught and held with consequent disadvantage and inconvenience. The outward extension of the enlargement 4 and the position of the plate 5 thereon, as set forth, throw the trace-chains outwardly far enough to prevent them from pressing against the shoulders of the animal while pulling.
At the bottom of the heme and extending inwardly therefrom is a securing-iron 15, consisting of a fasteningplate 16, having an arm 17 projecting outwardly and inwardly therefrom and constructed at its free end with a strap-loop 18 for receiving the connectingstrap 19, used in attaching the lower ends of two adjacently-situated devices. Between the fastening-plate 16 and the outer loop 18 the said arm 17 has an opening 20 formed therein, through which a rope or analogous device is adapted to be passed and provides a convenient form of securement. The arrangement of the fastening-iron, as set forth, prevents the hame from turning toofar back during the time the strain is applied thereto. The upper ends of the hames have suitable terret-rings 21 attached thereto and also provided with slots or openings 22, through which the upper fasteningstrap 23 extends, the latter carrying therewith a leather shield or pad 24 of well-known form or construction. The fastening-iron and the devices set forth at the upper part of the hames contribute to complete the efficiency of the entire device in addition to the novelty which resides particularly in the plate 5 and the parts attached thereto.
It will be understood that the hame as herewith described is intended to be used in connection with a heavy draft-harness and is constructed in a manner specified to relieve the strain as much as possible usually brought to bear on the shoulder of the animal and also to arrange the tracechains in such manner as to prevent rubbing or painful abrasion of the shoulders oradjacent parts of the body of the animal against which the hame has bearing.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is- A hame having the contour set forth, and an enlargement on the outer side standing outwardly therefrom, combined with a chainfastening mounted on said enlargement and consisting of an inwardly-extending hook, a
lug with opposite concave sides having a staple mounted thereover, and a ring engaging the said staple and lug, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
v ISAAC POLK DAVIS.
