E. BARNARD.
- `HALTBR- m :Imm l y .Imjpll mm 'Jesus ,57m/w45 QC. @W
ji-w MX' UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDWARD BARNARD, OF ROME, NEW YORK.
HALTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 293,999, dated February 26, 1884.' Application filed December 26, 1883. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
'Be it known that I, EDWARD BERNARD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Rome, in the county of Oneida and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Halters, of which the following is a specication, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to halters; and it has for its object to provide improved means for connecting the nose and head strap with the halter-strap, and also Vto enable the said nose and head strap to be made of one piece of material, thus obviating the necessity of sewing and riveting, as has heretofore been the case.
rIhe invention consists inthe improved construction of halter-bail and the arrangement of the same, hereinafter more fully described, and pointed out in the claims.-
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a halter having my improvement applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a detail view of the connecting bail or loop, and Fig. 3 is a modi fied form of the same.
A represents a head-strap having the usual throat-strap, B, which may be secured thereto in any preferred manner.
G represents the nose-strap,which is formed .in the same piece with the head-strap A.
D represents 'my improved bail or loop,
. which is arranged upon the head-strap, the Y same being bent at a right angle to itself and secured to the upper end of the bail, thus forming the nose-strap C. The halter-strap E is also secured to the bails or loops D, engaging one of the sides of the bail, to which it may be secured in any suitable manner. This bail or loop D consists of a casting of metal, which may be said to approximatea triangle in form, and having the upper end portion, a, and the lower rounded portion, b, to receive the halter-strap, and preventing any great wear to the same by frictional contact. y
In Fig. 3 I have shown a modification in which the bail or loop is made of a triangular form, and having the rounded corners at its upper end, in which the nose and head straps fit.
The improvement as above described is applied in the following manner: The bails are placed upon the strap and adj usted to the proper position. The lower end of the strap is then bent upon itself and around the under side of the bail, and secured thereto by sewing or riveting, as may be desired. Thus the nose and head strap are formed of one piece, which, it will be seen, is a great saving of time, labor, and material, and yet a perfectly safe and secure connection is obtained. The halterstrap is then secured to the bails or loops engaging the rounded portion thereof.
Having fully described my invention, whatI claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The herein-described bail or loop D for halters, having the upper portion, a, and the lower rounded portion, b, substantially as described, and for the purpose set forth.
2. In a halter, the combination, with the head and nose portions consisting of a single strap, of bails or loops D, made substantially triangular in form, and located at the angle formed at the junction of the head and nose portions of the halter, substantially as set forth.
3. The combination, with a bailor loop, D, consisting ofthe upper portion, a, andthe lower rounded portion, b, of the head-strap secured to said upper portion, a,A and bent upon itsel: at an angle to formthe nose-strap, and the halter-strap secured to the lower rounded por tion, b, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claimthe foregoing as m1 own I have hereto affixed my signature in pres ence of two witnesses.
FRED J. BARNARD, JosEPH WILLIAMS.
