Description

F. H. SMITH.
,Pocket-Books.
Patented July 7', 1874.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FREDERICK H. SMITH, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN POCKET-BOOKS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 152,875,idated July 7, 1S74; application tiled June 15, 1874.
OASE A.
To all 'whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, FREDERICK H. SMITH, of the city and county of Philadelphiaaud State of Pennsylvania, have invented an Improved Pocket-Book, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being Ahad to the accompanying drawings making part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a perspective View of a pocketbook havin g my improved stays applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a vertical section (enlarged) on the line m a: of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of my improved stay, (enlarged.) Fig. 4 represents the stay` (enlarged) before being bent into shape.
In pocket-books, as heretofore constructed, the corner ofthe gusset has been prevented from tearing down by stitching or bya metallic stay. The stitching, however, soon becomes worn, and rips 5 while the stay is loosened by the strain brought upon it, and falls from its position.
To provide a secure fastening which Will remain permanently in place is the object of my invention, which consists in a metallic stay provided With a projecting portion. or tongue, which is bent over and pressed down upon the turned edge of the back and the corner of the gusset, where they are united; the strain ou the gusset, which tends to open the stay, having no eifect ou the tongue, which, being clinched down on the gusset, holds the stay in place and prevents it from being lost.
To enable others skilled in the art to understand and use my invention, I will vproceed to describe the manner in which I have carried it out.
In the said drawings, A represents a pocketbook; a, its outer Hap, b,the turned edge of its back; and c, the gusset, the corner 5 of which is secured to the back by a metallic stay, d. This stay is composed of a piece of sheet metal, of the form seen in Fig. 4, and is provided with a projecting portion or tongue, 6, which is bent over, as seen in Figs. 2 and 3, and pressed tightly down upon the inside ot' the gusset, which is thus confined between the tongue 6 and the portion 7 of the stay. The other portion or tongue, 8, of the stay is bent over the outside of the back of the pocketbook, and is pressed down tightly thereon.
From the foregoing it will be seen that, should the portions 7 and 8 of the stay be drawn apart by the strain upon the gusset, it Will be impossible for the stay to fall from its position, as heretofore, as the tongue 6 will hold it securely in place; the strain to which the gusset is subjected having no tendency to separate the tongue 6 from the portions 7 of the stay, and all liability of the latter being lost, which would leave the gusset unsupported, is thus entirely avoided.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The metallic stayd, made up from a blank formed as shown in Fig. 4, and having tongues 6 and 8 at right angles to each other., substantially as and for the purpose set forth.`
Witness my hand this 11th day of J une, A. D. 1874.
F. H. SMITH.
