Q J. S.-BORDEN.
1101mm FOR Msommcsi RULES,
No. 293,623; f Patent ed Feb. 19,1884.
7 U ITED STATES PATENT OFFICE,
JAMES s. BORDEN, or TERRE HAUTE, INDIANA."
HoLDER FoR MECHANICS RULES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 293,623, dated Febrnary 19, 1884.
I Application filed November 23,1881. (No model.)
To all whoop it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES S. BORDEN, of
Terre Haute, in the county of Vigo and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Holders for Mechanics Rules; and I do hereby declarethat the followuse the same, reference being had to the accompanying'drawings and letters reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 represents my rule-holder (with rule) attached to the overalls or clothing. Fig. 2 represents a back view of my ruleholder, showing open slot made in the same, and spring-pin B; also safety-cap O. Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The invention is an improvement in the class of rule-holders made independent of the overalls or clothing. 1
The object of my invention is to construct a rule-holder out of any suitable material independent of the overalls or clothing, and attached thereto by pinning the same.
The nature of said improvement Ishallnow proceed to describe more fully.
In the drawings, A represents a case con structed to receive a mechanics rule, and may be pinned or fastened to the overalls or clothing by the pin B.-
B represents a spring and pin bent to bear (through the open slot in the backof holder 5 A) against the rule, overalls, or clothing, thus retaining the rule in the holder A, and'for pinning or fastening the holder A. to the overalls or clothing. 7
0 represents a safety cap or eye for receiv 4o ing the point of the pin It will be observed by this construction that the pin B not only fastens the holder A to the overalls or clothing, but bears or causes the overalls or clothing to bear against the rule 5 when attached thereto, thus retaining the rule in the holder A.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States I 1. A rule-holder for mechanics" rules, consisting of the case A, spring-pin B, and safetyeye 0, constructed and arranged for operation substantially as described and shown.
. 2. In combination with overalls or other 5 articles of clothing, a ruleholder composed of the elements A, B, and (J, as described, and applied substantially as and for the purpose set forth,
JAMES S. BORDEN.
Witnesses:
EDWARD REED, RICHARD S. FENNANT.
