L. O. NORRIS. KEY FASTENBR.
No. 598,229 Patented Feb. 1,1898
WITNESSES: INVENTOR wggz w Jewels [f fl m'rz's igwam ATTORNEY T *Nrrnn STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LEWIS C. NORRIS, OF ERIE, PENNSYLVANIA.
KEY-FASTEN ER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 598,229, dated February 1, 1898.
Application filed January fl, 1897.
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, LEWIS O. NORRIS, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of Erie, in the county of Erie and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Key-Ring and Key-Guard; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, forming part of this specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a combined key-ring and key-guard of simple construction, which can be used both as a key-ring and also a key-guard to prevent a key from being turned from the outside of a door; and it consists in the novel features of construction hereinafter set forth and described, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a view in elevation of my combined key-ring and key-guard. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the same in use as a keyguard. Fig. 3 is a view of the body portion thereof. Fig. 4 is a perspective View of the other portion thereof.
Referring to the parts of this device illustrated in the accompanying drawings, the body portion consists of a piece of springwire, the centralpart A of which is bent so as to form about three-fourths of a circle, from whence the ends are bent outward nearly parallel to each other, so as to form arms A A thereon. In these arms A A are cut notches a a, near their junction with the circular portion A,and near the ends thereof are also notches a a therein. The other portion of this device is preferably made in the shape of a tapering plate B, having ears B B on one end thereof at right angles to the plane of the plate, and in these ears B B are holes I) 6, adapted to pass over the arms A A Serial No. 617,935. (No model.)
and engage the notches a and 11. therein, so as to hold the plate B in place thereon when the ears B B of the plate B are engaged with the notches Ct at. The device then operates as a convenient key-ring, the plate B being also adapted to have the name and address of the owner stamped thereon. When, however, it is desired to use this device as a key-guard, the section A is removed and placed over the door-knob shank C (see Fig. 2) and the end of the plate B passed through the loop at on the end of the door-key D, and the ears B B are then moved up on the arms A A, so as to engage the notches a ct therein, or to such point thereon as may be desired, the outward spring of said arms preventing any downward movement of the plate B thereon.
Having thus fully described my invention, so as to enable others to construct and use the same, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States,
1. In a key-guard, the combination, with a wire loop provided with diverging springarms and adapted to be slipped over the shank of a door-knob, of a plate provided with laterally projecting perforated lugs at one end which are slidable on the said spring-arms, the other end of the said plate being slidable in the hole in the key-shank, substantially as set forth.
2. In a key-guard, the combination, with a wire loop provided with spring-arms having notches a a on their opposite sides, of a plate provided with laterally-projecting perforated lugs at one end which are slidable on the said spring-arms and which enter the said notches, substantially as set forth. 1
In testimony whereof I affix my signature inpresence of two witnesses.
LEWIS O. NORRIS.
