UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALEXANDER GOLL, OF FRANKFORT-ON-THE-MAIN, PRUSISIA, GERMANY.
IMPROVEMENT IN SLEEVE-BUTTONS AND STUDS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 190,209, dated May 1, 1877; application filed To all whom 'it may concern Be it known that I, ALEXANDER GoLL, of Frankfbrt-on-the-Main, in the Kingdom of' Prussia and Empire of Germany, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Sleeve-Buttons and Studs, of which the following is a specification In the accompanying drawing, Figure l represents a bottom view, and Figs. 2 and 3 are sectional side elevations, of my improved sleeve-button, shirt-stud, or pin.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The invention relates to an improved button or stud construction for shirt-sleeves and bosoms, which is alsov applicable to bosomneedles, breastpins, and similar articles, intended to connect the ends of fabrics.
The invention will lirst be described in connection with the drawing, and then pointed out in the claim.
In the drawing, A represents a button, stud, pin, or other article; and B, the slotted shank of the same, which is extended at right angles to form an elbow-shaped shank. Ailat crosspiece or pivot, a, connects the ends of the slotted shank, and carries a slit spring bar or base, C, that is fitted around the fiat crosspiece, so as to readily swing thereon. The spring-base C is made of one piece of metal, that is doubled up and. secured to the crosspiece a, so as to bind tightly by its spring action thereon, and assume a more or less fixed position on the cross-piece, when the springbase is turned outwardly or inwardly, forming, in either case, a protractiou of the angular piece of the shank.
When the spring-base is swung outwardly, as shown in Fig. 3, the button is ready to be February 3, 1877.
applied to the holes of the sleeve, shirt-front, or other article, through which it passes with great facility, being then swung back in opposite direction across the shank, sov that the spring-base forms a cross-bar, and prevents the detaching ot the button or stud, keeping the same also securely in place.
When the button or stud is to be taken olf, the spring base-piece is thrown over to the outside of the shank, and withdrawn with the same from the fabric.
The angular or bent part of the shank may be provided with a shoulder or seat, b, as shown in Fig. 3, on which the springbase G is fitted by side shoulders d, so as to assume a steady position thereon as a cross-bar, 'as shown in Fig. 2.
To guard against any possibility of loss of button or stud, one spring end of the base may bc provided with a small pin, that enters a hole of the other spring end, which is especially advisable in the spring-base of studs, as the spring-pressure of the same is less powerful.
A button or stud of this construction is quickly and conveniently applied and taken oft', and securely retained on the shirt or other article.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A sleeve button or stud having an elastic piece of metal, C, doubled or open-slotted, and attached to a at pivot at the end ot its bent shank, as and for the purpose specified.
ALEXANDER GOLL.
