UNITED STATES THEODORE GENTZSOH AND GUSTAVE PATENT OFFICE. I
A. VITTE, JR, OF BROOKLYN, N. Y.
GARMENT-SUPPORTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 366,827, dated July 19, 1887.
Application filed March 30, 1887.
T0 aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, THEODORE GENTZSCII and GUSTAVE A. \VITTE, J12, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, haveinvented a new and Improved Supporter, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
Our invention relates to an improved supporter for stockings, shirt sleeves, and other articles of wearing-apparel, and has forits object to provide a simple, cheap, and effective device, readily and quickly attached and detaehed.
The invention consists in providing a slotted plate with a pivoted arm having a needlepoint, as will be hereinafter fully set forth, and pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a supporter adapted for engagement at one end, and Fig. 2 a perspective view of a supporter capable of engaging at both ends.
In carrying out the object of the invention a plate, A, is provided, to which at one end the usual elastic strip, 13, is secured in the ordinary manner, as shown in Fig. 1. The opposite or outer end of the plate A. is provided with a central preferably U-shaped slot, 1), whereby two spaced members, I) and b are formed, one member, Z), of which is bent out ward and upward upon itself in contact with the body to form an eye, (I, the other member, I), being simply bent upward, forming a loopshield, d. This one member is preferably slightly longer than the other.
- An arm, D, is pivoted in the plate A about centrally the same and near the shorter edge thercofiwhich arm may extend upward above (No model.)
the opposite edge of the plate upon both sides and there unite, as shown; or it may consist of a single piece of metal passing over that face of the plate containing the eye and loop. In either event an auxiliary or needle arm, D, is provided, extending outward therefrom and at an angle therewith, which need1e-arm is adapted when the stocking or article to be held or supported is carried up into the U- shaped slot 1) to pass through the same into the eye d and be closely embraced by the loop (1. The metal constituting the plate being preferably a spring metal, the said loop binds the needle and retains it in position at that end.
In Fig. 2 the plate A is shown more or less elongated, having both ends provided with a notch and a pivoted needle-carrying arm, whereby the supporter may be detachably secured to a garment at either or both ends.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A supporter consisting of a plate provided with a slotted end, a pivoted arm carrying a needle adapted to extend transversely said slot, and means for retaining said needle in position transversely the slot, substantially as set forth.
2. A supporter consisting of a plate provided with a slotted end, a loop and eye formed at opposite sides of said slot, and a needleearrying arm pivoted to said plate, said needle being adapted to extend transversely said slot and enter said loop and eye, substantially as shown and described.
