UNITED STATES PATENT @rnrcn.
HERBERT NEWELL NORTHROP, OF WEST SOMERVILLE, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO MARY ANTHONY, OF XVAKEFIELD, MASSA- cnusn'rrs.
SPECIFIGATIQN forming part of Letters Patent No. 702,816, dated June 1'7, 1902.
Application filed April 2, 1902. Serial No. 101,082. (No model.)
To a whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, HERBERT NEWELL NORTHROP, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of WVest Somerville,in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and Improved Garment-Supporter, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of the invention is to provide a new and improved garment-supporter which is simple and durable in construction, easily applied, and arranged for use on skirts or waists to hold the same in proper relative position orfor use as a hose-supporter.
The invention consists of novel features and parts and combinations of the same, as will be more fully described hereinafter, and then pointed out in the claims.
A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings, forming apart of this specification, in which similar characters of referenceindicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improvement as applied. Fig. 2 is an enlarged edge view showing the Waist, corset, and underskirt in section, the dress-skirt and belt being omitted. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the improvement. Fig. 4 is an edge view of the same. Fig. 5 is a rear face view of the same; and Fig. 6 is an enlarged edge view of the improvement as applied on the complete dress, showing the garment in section.
The garment supporter consists, essentially, of a plate A, terminating at one end in an integral hook B and carrying at the other end a pin (1 for securing the supporter in position on the dress, as plainly shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 6. The lower or pin end of the plate A is split lengthwise of the plateto form a plurality of members, as A and A of which the end of the member A is curved backward to form an eye A adapted to receive the pivot C of the pin 0, so that the latter can swing longitudinally on the plate A. The pivot C terminates at one end in a bend C from which extends the shank of the pin 0, and the other end of the said pivot is provided with an angular arm 0 pressed on by the member A which acts as a spring to hold the pin normally in a closed position. The spring member A permits of swinging the pin 0 into an open position whenever it is desired to fasten the pin to the garment. If desired, the point end of the pin may be slightly bent toward the plate, as at O The bent portion C is so arranged as to bring the shank of the pin 0 to substantially the middle portion of the plate A, as plainly indicated in Fig. 5, to insure holding the plate A'and its hook B in proper position when the device is applied.
As shown in Figs. 2 and 6, the pin 0 is engaged with the corset D, the underskirt E, and the waist F, the plate A resting on the outer face of the waist, with the hook in an uppermost position, so that the waistband G of the outer or dress skirt G can he slipped with its upper edge under the said hook B. The outer belt can be applied over the device in any desired manner, and, if desired, the hook B can be hooked onto the lower bar of the buckle H on the waist-belt H, so that the several parts are securely held in proper relati ve position.
The device maybe used as a hose-supporter, and is for this purpose attached to the sides of the corset or to another garment, with the hook B in a lowermost position. v
The device is very simple and durable in construction, can be cheaply manufactured, and readily applied.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A garment-supporter, having a plate terminating at one end in a hook and having its other end split, and a pin fulcrumed on one of the split end members and having an angular arm engaged by another split end member, as set forth.
2. A garment-supporter,com prising a plate terminating at one end in a hook and having its other end split to form two members, of which one is formed into an eye extending on the back of the plate, and a pin extending along substantially the middle of said plate at the back thereof, the said pin having a pivot, connected by a bent portion with the shank of the pin, the pivot engaging the said eye and the said pivot terminating in an angular arm pressed on by the other spring member of the split end of the plate, as set forth.
3. A garment-supporter comprising a plate name to this speoification in the presence of terminating at one end in a. hook and having two subscribing witnesses. its other end split, and a pin fulcrumed upon the plate near said split; end and having an 5 angular arm engaged by one of the split mem- Witnesses: hers. VILLIAM'H. TUCKER,
In testimony whereof I have signed my JOHN H. GRIFFIN.
