@CASE FOR HATS.'
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 293,183, dated February 5, 1884.
^ Appiianon med April 1s, 18ers. (No mener.)
have invented a certain new and useful Improvementin Cases for Hats', Aof which the following is a specification.
The 'object of this improvement is to ,produce a case in which a hat such as is worn by a Knight Templar may be conveniently and safely carried from place to place.
n The improvement consists in the combination, in a hat-case, of a body' portion having an upper compartmcnt'shaped internally to approximate tothe external contour of a hat such as is `worn by a Knight Templar, and adapted to accommodate the lhat in an upright position; a handle at the top of the body portion,which will be. adjacent to the top of the hat; a strap or straps adapted to extend 4across the body portion under the hat, so as ,to support the hat and retain it in its compartment; a lower compartment into which the feather of the hat may extend, and in which other articles may be placed; and a cover applied to the bottom ofthe body portion, and forming the bottom of said lower compartment.
ln the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a longitudinal section of a case embodying my improvement, and Fig. 2 is a transverse section of the same. 4
Similar letters of reference designate corresponding part-s in both figures.
A designates the body of the case, and B desi gnates the cover thereof. The body of the case has sides, which are curved outwardly or convexly at the middle portion,a, of the tcp, and in reverse directions toward the ends, and below these curved portions are straight portions C. Between the sides extends a strip of material which forms the top and ends ofthe body of the case. The body ofthe case is pref- .erably made wider at the middle than at the ends. It will be seen that the upper portion ing it into two compartments. The upper compartment, which consists of the part of the body that conforms to the hat, receives the hat, and the lower compartment, which consists of the portion of the body that is between the straight portions c, receives the end of the feather, and serves, also, to accommodate the regalia and gloves of a Knight Templar. The straps C are attached to opposite portions of the sides of the body of the case, and are shown as made in sections, whose ends are united by buckles or fasteners d. The end ofv these sections, when thus united, may be nnfastened and refastened at will, to facilitate the insertion and removal of the hat. These straps can be made of india-rubber, tloth, or other suitable material, and they support the hat and retain it in place in its compartment. The cover B of the case has a rim, which tits around the lower portion of the body of the case. It is secured in place by straps D,which are fastened at one end to the body of the case, extend thence across the cover, Vand at the other ends are fastened to short straps D by means of buckles c. By unfastening these straps the cover may be removed at pleasure.
lt will be observed that a hat placed in this case will be supported upon the straps C, and
This case may be made of various materials.'
It will be advantageous to make it of sheet metal in some cases. I prefer, however, to make it of pasteboard coveredwith leather.
The straps C D D may be secured to the body ofthe case in any suitable. manner. I have shown rivetsf, which pass through the sides 9 of the body ofthe case and through the straps C D D.
This case will not only keep a hat in good condition, but will be light, neat, and convenient to carry.
IOO
What Ielaini as niy invention, and desire to support the hat and retain it in its-compartsecure by Letter-s Patent, is l ment, a lower compartment into which the In a hat-ease, the Combination of a body feather of the hat may extend, and in which portion having an upper Compartment shaped other articles may be placed, and a cover ap- 15 5 internally to approximate to the external oonplied to the bottom of the body portion, and
