Description
March 1, 1960 J. G. HAGGBLAD 2,926,672
PIPE STEM cup Filed July 16, .1958
John 6. Haggb/ad INVENTOR.
United States Patent O PIPE STEM CLIP John G. Haggblad, Detroit, Mich. Application July 16, 1958, Serial No. 748,881
4 Claims. (Cl. 131-186) This invention relates to new and useful improvements in tobacco or smoking pipe bit or stem attachments, particularly, although not necessarily, for those who wear dentures and has for its primary object to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, novel means whereby the pipe may be firmly held in the mouth by the teeth, leaving both hands of the smoker free to be used for other purposes.
Another important object of the present invention is to provide an attachment of the aforementioned character which is adapted to be readily slipped for use on a conventional tobacco pipe stem, bit or the like without modifying same.
Still another important object of the invention is to provide an attachment of the character described for pipe stems or bits, etc., which is adapted to be gripped between the teeth and which, further, is engageable behind the upper teeth and with the front of the lower teeth in a manner to securely hold the device in the smokers mouth.
These together with other objects and advantages which will become subsequently apparent reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming a part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which:
Figure l is a perspective view of a tobacco pipe provided with an attachment embodying the present invention; t
Figure 2 is a fragmentary central section of the mouthpiece end portion of the device shown in Figure 1; and
Figure 3 is a perspective view of the device per se.
Referring now to the drawing in detail, it will be seen that reference character 4 designates generally a conventional tobacco pipe. The tobacco pipe 4 includes a bowl 5 and a stem 6, the bit 7 of which terminates atits free end in an integral enlargement or head 8. Reference character 9 designates the usual smoke passage through the stem 6 and the bit 7 from the bowl 5.
The embodiment of the present invention which has been illustrated comprises a substantially U-shaped clip 10 of a suitable plastic or other material. The clip 10 is adapted to be slipped laterally on the bit 7 in a manner to abut the shoulder provided by the enlargement or head '8 of said bit. This is shown in Figure 2 of the drawing.
2,926,672 Patented Mar. 1, 1960 In use, the clip 10 is slipped laterally on the bit 7 from one side thereof and abuts the enlargement or head 8. The bit 7 with the clip 10 thereon is'then inserted in the mouth and said clip is gripped between the upper and lower teeth in an obvious manner. The flange 12 is engaged behind the upper teeth and the flange 14 is brought to bear against the front of the lower teeth for firmly and comfortably supporting the pipe 4 in the mouth of the smoker. The construction of the device is such that it may be readily removed from the pipe for cleaning, if desired, or for other purposes.
The foregoing is considered as illustrative only of the principles of the invention. Further, since numerous modifications and changes will readily occur to those skilled in the art, it is not desired to limit the invention to the exact construction and operation shown and described, and accordingly, all suitable modifications and equivalents may be resorted to, falling within the scope of the invention as claimed.
What is claimed as new is as follows:
1. A tobacco pipe bit attachment comprising; a substantially U-shaped clip adapted to he slipped laterally on the bit from one side thereof and comprising upper and lower legs, said clip to be gripped between the teeth of the smoker, a flange rising from the upper leg and engageable behind the upper teeth, and a flange depending from the lower leg and engageable with the front of the lower teeth.
2. A tobacco pipe bit attachment comprising: a substantially U-shaped clip adapted to he slipped laterally on the bit from one side thereof to be gripped between the teeth of the smoker, said clip including upper and lower legs, an upstanding flange integral with the rear longitudinal marginal portion of the upper leg and en gageable behind the upper teeth, and a depending flange integral with the forward longitudinal marginal portion of the lower leg and engageable with the front of the lower teeth.
3. A tobacco pipe bit attachment comprising: a substantialy U-shaped clip adapted to be slipped laterally on the bit from one side thereof to be gripped between the teeth of the smoker, said clip including upper and lower legs, an upstanding flange on the upper leg engageable behind the upper teeth, and a forwardly offset flange depending from the lower leg and engageable with the front of the lower teeth. 1
4. The combination with a tobacco pipe comprising a bit including a head on one end'providing a shoulder, of an attachment comprising a substantially U-shaped, removable clip adapted to be slipped on the bit to be gripped between the upper and lower teeth of a smoker and including upper and lower legs for abutting the shoulder, a flange on the upper leg engageable behind the upper teeth, and a flange on the lower leg engageable with the front of the lower teeth.
