SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 292,004, dated January 15, 1884..

To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, CULBERsoN S. GARRI- GUs, of Tiffin, in the county of Seneca and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bale-Tie Fasteners, and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, olea-r,l and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and usc the same. l
My invention relates to improvements in bale-tie fasteners; and it consists in certain features of construction and in combination of parts hereinafter described, and pointed ont in the claims.
In the drawings, Figure l is a plan view of my improved bale-tie fastener. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section ofthe same, with pieces of bale-ties attached.
A represents the frame of the structure, consisting of two side pieces connected by the rods a, b, and c at one end, and at the other en d by the bar B, whose upper surface is slightly concaved and corrugated, as shown in crosssection.
Directly above the bar B is pivoted to the frame A the cam-lever C, that is also corrugated, and on that part of the cani having the greatest throw. Thispart ofthe cani is slight] y convex, so that it would about fit the concavit-y of the bar B. The arrangements of parts is such and the said cam-lever is so pivoted to the frame that, when the handle c is in the position shown, the said cam will have pressed and bent an intervening tie into the shape shown. Vith the handle c' raised out of the way, the end of bale-tie D is passed between the rods b and c and bent around the bar a, and is then passed back over the bar c, as shown in Fig. 2. These ties are usually of iron, and of such width and thickness as the work may require. After the end of the tiehas been secured in the manner just described it is passed around the bale, and the other end, d, of the tie is passed between the bar B and the cam-lever O 4 and secured, as already described. Vhen the handle c is raised to about a vertical position, there is ample space between the parts B and O to conveniently insert the end ofthe tie. As the tie is wrapped around the balcthe up- 5 per part draws the shorter part down upon the rod c, which, together with the loop around the rod a, holds this end of the tie so firmly that the tie would be more likely to break in some other part than to pull out of its engage- 5 ment with the said rods.
This fastener is cheap, simple, and effective, can be quickly applied and so quickly removed, and admits of the ties being used over as many times as desired; also, there are no 6| long ends wasted, as in the ordinary manner of fastening, and the tie is not weakened by rivet-holes, but retains its full strength in all of its parts.
What I claim is- 6v l. In a bale-tie fastener, the frame A, in combination with the rods a, I), and c, adapted to hold one end of the bale-tie by looping it around and passing it between the rods, substantiall y as shown and described. 7(
