INVENTUR ATTORNEY. I
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM R. LENARD, OF WAGO, TEXAS, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND JAMES S. RODEOKER, OF SAME PLACE.
l M PROVEM ENT IN BALE-Tl ES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 199,725, dated January 29, 1878; application filed 4 June 11, 1877. 7
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM R. LENARD, of Waco, in the county of McLennan and State of Texas, have invented a new and Improved Bale-Tie, of which the following is a specification:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved bale-tie. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of a modified form of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corre sponding parts.
The object of my invention is to provide an inexpensive yet efl'ective and easily-applied bale-tie, and to dispense with the use of buckles in fastening.
In the drawings, A is an iron band of suitable width and thickness, one end of which is bent up at right angles, forming a hook, at, that engages the bale-covering when the band is fastened around the bale. B is a U-shaped piece of iron, that is riveted to the opposite end of the band, and is capable of receiving the free end of the band, as shown in the drawing.
The modification shown in Fig. 2 is made by bending the end of the band on a diagonal line, so that when bent .down upon itself it crosses itself at right angles. It is then bent up across the inner face of the band, leaving sufficient space between it and the face of the band to receive the band, as shown at G in the drawing.
The manner of using the tie is as follows: The bale being pressed in the usual way, the hook a of the bale-tie is placed against the side of the bale some distance from the point of fastening. The end, B or O, is then carried around the bale and over the hook, and is placed under the band, completing the operation of fastening. The hook at assists in holding the band, as it seizes fast upon the bale-covering, enabling the band to be drawn taut over the bale, and, taken together with the U-shaped piece, forms a strong and reli able fastening.
