UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDWARD H. GODSHALK, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
FORMER FOR DRESS TRlMMlNGS, &c.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 287,662, dated 0ctober'30, 1883.
- Application filed April 28,1883. (No model.)
To all whom it may. concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD H. GoDsnALK, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in theManufacture of Ladies Dress- Trimmings, Ornaments, Gimp, &c., which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a top or plan view of a former for the manufacture of trimmings, &c., embodying my invention. .Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof, partly sectional. Fig. 3 is an illustration of the design produced.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
. My invention consists of a former for ladies dress-trimmings, ornaments, &c., constructed of a flexible pad, to which is permanently affixed a series of pins arranged relatively to the design of the trimming, &c., to be formed, braid, gimp, 8150., being passed or fitted around the pins and sewed together, whereby uniform designs may be produced and the work accomplished in an expeditious manner.
Referring to the drawings, A represents a piece of leather or other suitable material of flexible nature, to which is permanently affixed a series of projecting pins, B, which are arranged relatively to a desired design for trimmings, ornaments, 8m, such design being a leaf, palm, scroll, &c., the pins being headed and sufficiently separated to permit the passage around them of the braid, gimp, &c., which being accomplished, the contiguous or adjacent-parts are sewed together, whereby the shape of the design is preserved, and the same is then removed from the pins, it being noticed that uniform and superior work may be produced.
It will be seen that the pad may be conven iently handled and bent as desired, so, as to stretch or contract the different lengths of the braid, gimp, &c., as the work progresses, according to the necessity of the case, and the pad may be reused, being strong and durable..
The pins are headed at both ends, whereby they are securely connected with the pad at their lower ends, and the braid, &c.,' will not slip from the upper ends.
Having thus described my invention, What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1'. As a new article of manufacture, a former for trimmings, ornaments, 8210., consisting of a.
flexible pad and pins permanently secured thereto, said pins being headed and arranged harmoniously in the form of designs, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The'former for trimmings, &c., consisting of a flexible pad and connected pins, both ends thereof being headed, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
E. H. GODSHALK.
