UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ROBERT BENJAMIN MCMASTERS, OF MARATHON, NET V YORK.
GLOVE.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 750,683, dated January 26, 1904.
Application filed August 2'7, 1903. Serial No. 170,958. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ROBERT BENJAMIN Mo- MAsTERs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Marathon, in the county of Cortland and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gloves; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in gloves; and the object of the invention is to produce an article of this description which is double and substantially seamless upon the palm side thereof, and in carrying out my invention it is my purpose to provide a blank, of any suitable material, cut to form the palm and extra covering for the portions of the fingers of a glove and in the provision of reinforcing-pieces which are placed beneath the finger-straps and stitched along the marginal edges of the integral straps, forming the fingers without bringing two meeting edges together, and in prolonging the reinforcing-strips, if desired, in order to form a double thickness to the palm of the glove.
The invention consists, further; in various details of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts, which will be hereinafter fully described and then specifically defined in the appended claim.
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which, with the letters of reference marked thereon, form a part of this application, and in which drawings- Figure 1 is a plan view of a blank of material cut to form the integral finger-straps. Fig. 2 is a view showing the reinforcing-pieces which are stitched along the edges of the integral finger-straps to said pieces, and Figs. 3, 4:, 5, and 6 are detail views of the pieces for the four fingers of the hand.
Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates a piece of leather or other suitable material which is cut to form the palm and the back side of the glove.
B designates a piece of any suitable material which is cut in the shape disclosed in the drawings and has one of its longitudinal edges B stitched, as at C, to the integral strap forming the index-finger of the glove. Said piece B is stitched at the outer end of the finger to the marginal ends of the back and palm side of the blank, as at D, and another row of stitching, C, is made along the marginal edge of the integral strap, forming the index-finger without forming a scam in said piece B, while a seam is formed at the ends of said piece and the back and front portions of the finger. The other longitudinal edge of said piece B is stitched at C to the marginal edge of the integral strap forming the back to the indexfinger, and the dart along the edge of the piece B is stitched to the adjacent reinforcing-piece F, which is stitched at one marginal edge to the marginal edge of the second finger along the back of the glove, while the piece F is stitched to the under side of the finger, as at F, without forming a seam, while another row of stitching, F along the marginal edge of the under side of the second finger is made, and the opposite edge of the reinforcing-piece for the second finger is stitched to the marginal edge of the back to the second finger, and a seam is formed by the meeting ends of the reinforcing-strip of the second finger and the under and rear sides of the finger. The third finger has a similar reinforcing-piece H, which is connected, by means of a seam, to the marginal edges of the back to the third finger, while rows of stitching H are made along the marginal edges of the under side of the third finger without forming a seam, and the little finger is similarly constructed with a reinforcing-strip extending across the under side of the little finger. A stitching (indicated by letters K K) upon the under side of the glove holds the reinforcing-strips to said under side, and, if desired, the reinforcing-strips may be extended so as to make a double thickness to the palm.
By the construction of a glove made in accordance with my invention it will be observed that the portions of the glove forming the palm face thereof are all of double thickness where most wear comes upon the glove, and by having the marginal edges of the integral finger-straps upon the under side connected to the reinforcing-strips, which form, with the palm side of the blank, a double thickness to the glove, there will be no seams to rip, as all the connecting edges of the reinforcingstrip and the integral straps come along the marginal edges of the integral straps which form the back of the glove, thus producing a glove which will be durable and stand excessive wear.
While I have made a particular construction of glove embodying the features of my invention, it will be understood that I may make alterations in the same without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Having thus fully described my invention, What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A glove comprising a blank having integral straps forming the backs and the fronts for the fingers, and reinforcing-straps stitched to the marginal edges of the back straps of the fingers, the longitudinal edges of the fronts to the fingers being stitched to said reinforcingstraps forming seams intermediate the fingers, the inner ends of said reinforcing-straps being sewed to the palm side of said blank and stitched at their outer ends to the ends of the straps forming the backs and the fronts of the fingers and at their inner ends stitched together intermediate the fingers, as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I hereunto afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ROBERT BENJAMIN MCMASTERS.
