, UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MICHAEL LOUIS HILLER, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
BOW FOR LADIES WEAR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 352,823, dated November 16, 1886.
.To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, MICHAEL LoUIs HIL- LER, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bows for Ladies Shoes and Dresses, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to ornamental bows for ladies shoes and other purposes; and my object is to provide an adjustable non-elastic foundation or backing for a bow, which will maintain the desired given shape, and which will also afford a re-enforcing support therefor, as will be fully understood from the following description, when taken in connection with the annexed drawings.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1' represents a front view of my improved bow for ladles shoes and dresses. Fig. 2 is a rear View with a part broken away, and Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse section of the same on line 00 as, Fig, 2.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A in the drawings represents the shield, of a pliable material, through which a needle may be readily passed and preferably of a crescent shape, (represented in Fig. 2,) and B a suitable fabric that is made in the shape of a bow for ladies shoes and dresses, and attached to the shield. Between the shield and fabric is interposed a transverse strip, 0, of annealed wire-tape material, which enables the bending of the shield and the fabric intostraight or curved shape, as required by the shape and curvature of the shoe, dress, or otherarticle with which the bow is intended to be used. The flexible-wire tape serves to retain the'shape of the bow, whereby theornamental appearance of the same is greatly en'hanced and its shape preserved.
It will be observed from the above description that I employ an inelastic flexible back- Application filed January 9,1885. Serial No. 152,377. (No model.)
of a broad piece of flexible woven fabric, preferably the article known as wigging, which is of such shape and size that the several plaits forming the bow, when sewed to it, will maintain their proper relative position and shape; also, that I interpose between the bow and the said backing or shield a transverse re-enforcing tape or strip of material having annealed wires woven in it, whichstrip, shield, and bow are suitably sewed together, constituting a durable and exceedingly cheap article of manufacture.
I amaware that bows for ladies shoes'and dress-trimmings having an elastic shield have been used heretofore, and I do not claim this feature, as in my improved bow the elastic shield is done away with, and a flexible woven backing or shield and a re-enforcing flexible tape substituted, which may bebent to any shape, and which retains the desired shape after the bow has been properly adjusted. I am-also aware that wire frames and metallic shields have been employed for stiffeners in the manufacture of neck-scarfs, and that cardboard has been employed to stiffen bows for ladies wear. These devices I disclaim.
Having thus described my invention, I claim ing or shield for the bow B, which is composed .7 as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent-
