IMPROVEMENT IN BQSOM-PADS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 180,173, dated July 25, 1876; application filed September 23, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AMos W. THOMAS, of Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Permsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bosom-Forms and do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and useit, reference being had to'the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification, in which Figure l is a perspective and Fig. 2 a front view of my improved bosomform.
My invention has for its object to provide a bosom form or pad for ladies use, which shall combine, in an eminent degree, the qualities of, first, lightness; second, elasticity; third, naturalness; and be so constructed that it will adapt itself to various sized dresses, the breasts or bust sections contracting when depressed, as hereinafter fully described.
This improved bosom-form is made of light flexible wire, so arranged as to produce two protuberances corresponding in curvature and outline to a perfectly-developed bust. The wires forming each breast may be separate, and the breasts at the junction of their edges united by clamps, cords, or other equivalent means, or said wires may be continuous, proceeding from one breast to the other, and forming both, as will hereinafter be fully set forth. The breasts or bust sections may be attached to or form a frame, which is intended to be covered by muslin, or other suitable textile material, and be ornamented in any suitable or appropriate manner.
Referring to the accompanying drawing, which represents my invention, A A represent'two circles formed by the circumferential wires to a having their ends fastened by me tallic clamps to c, or equivalent retaining devices. B represents a wire for holding the circles A A together, or the wires to a may be continued to effect the same purpose. O'O represent the wires for producing the bulging or protuberance corresponding to the bust, said wires being connected by tying, or otherwise secured at the center or point of greatest elevation, and their ends attached by means of metallic clamps, or other equivalent devices to the circumferential wires a a. The wires 0 O are curved laterally, the preferable form being ot'a scroll or letter S. D is a covering of muslin or other textile material, which may be ornamented by edging, embroidery, or otherwise, in any suitable manner.
The principal advantages resulting from this construction are the capacity of the form to yield readily and adapt itself to various sized dresses without producing any side bulging or distortion. When pressure is applied to the outside of the bosom-form, the wires B B yield inwardly, and at the same time turn, producing a greater curvature and corresponding contraction, thus adapting the bosom-form to any sized dress equal to or within its maximum area.
What I claim as my invention is- 1. A wire bosom-form, composed of two elevated sections corresponding to the wearers breast, united by a rigid skeleton frame in the manner described, so as to keep said sections at their proper relative positions, substantially as set forth.
2. In a bosom-form, an S-shaped bow confined at the ends, so as to form a bow tending to close up within itself when the center is depressed, as described.
3. In a bosom-form, a series of S-sha-ped bows, arranged, as described, so as to have a tendency to close up within themselves when depressed, and counterbalance one another, so as to maintain the true circular form of the confining-band.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 29th day of July, 1874. v AMOS W. THOMAS.
Witnesses:
JNo. A. BELL, T. FRANK HARTMAN.
