Description

M. GLOWKA Sept. 23, 1958 FLEXIBLE PLASTIC COVERING FOR GARMENT HANGERS Filed April 17, 1956 INVENTOR 75 MARTW- GLOWKA ATTOMEY I United States Patent 2,853,217 I FLEXIBLE PLASTIC COVERING FOR GARMENT HANGERS This invention relates to new and useful improvements in garment hangers and covers for such hangers.
More particularly, the present invention proposes the construction of an improved cover and garment hanger, the cover being of stiffly flexible plastic material and easily applied to and removed from a garment hanger to protect the hanger and garments hung on the hanger.
Garment hangers customarily made with metal hanging hooks tend to become rusty not only at the hook but at nearby points on the body of the hanger. This is due to this portion of the hanger being continually exposed and out of contact and not covered by the supported garment.
As a principal object, the present invention proposes forming a hanger and hanger cover which will cover inexpensively the normally exposed parts of the garment hangerto prevent hook rust from forming or falling on the body of the hanger or on garments on the body of the hanger.
For further comprehension of the invention, and of the objects and advantages thereof, reference will be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, and to the appended claims in which the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth.
In the accompanying drawings forming a material part of this disclosure:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a Wood garment hanger and cover constructed and arranged in accordance with the present invention.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged view of a portion of the structure shown in Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken on line 33 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 is a detail fragmentary view of one of the cover halves with parts broken away and in section.
Fig. 5 is a view similar to Fig. 4 showing the upper end of the cover half.
Fig. 6 is a view similar to Fig. 2 but illustrating a modification of the present invention.
Fig. 7 is a view similar to Figs. 2 and 6 but illustrating another modification.
Fig. 8 is a sectional view taken on line 88 of Fig. 7.
Fig. 9 is a view similar to Fig. l but illustrating still another modification of the present invention.
Fig. 10 is a fragmentary view of the structure shown in Fig. 9.
Fig. 11 is a fragmentary front view of another modified form of the invention.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, the hanger and cover in accordance with the first form of the invention illustrated in Figs. 1 to 5, inclusive, are designated generally by the reference numerals 15 and 16, respectively.
Hanger 15 is the ordinary type wood or plastic hanger having a wire hook 17 and a body 18 with shoulder portions 19 and 20 and a crossbar 21. The body 18 is formed with spaced detent recesses 18 on its midsection.
The protective cover 16 consists of two mating or matching halves or tubular portions 22 and 23, both identical in construction. The tubular portions 22 and 23 are made of stiflly flexible plastic material each with a lengthwise slit opening 24 and sidewall edges 25 and 26.
Hook 17 has a pair of spaced flattened cars 27 and 28 disposed adjacent the crook or bend 29 of the hook.
Tubular portions 22 and 23 are adapted to enclose the shank portion 30 of the hook 17 below the ears 27 and 28 and adjacent portions of the shoulders of the body of the hanger. The two tubular portions 22 and 23 form substantially an inverted Y-shape. The tubular portions frictionally and removably fit over the portion 30 of the hook and portions of the shoulders of the body of the hanger and are formed with protuberances 22 and 23' respectively fitting into the recesses 18' in the hanger body 18.
The modification of the invention illustrated in Fig. 6 is characterized by the provision of a hanger 35 having a hook 36 and a body 37. A protective cover 38 comprising tubular portions 39 and 40 is provided. The tubular portions 39 and 40 are identically constructed, each having a lengthwise opening 41. A retainer clamp ring 42 slidably and frictionally fits over the upper portions 43 and 44 of the tubular portions or halves 39 and 40. Hook 36 has spaced flattened ears 45 under which the protective cover fits.
The modification of the invention illustrated in Figs. 7 and 8 is characterized by the provision of a hanger 50 having a wire book 51 with spaced flattened cars 52 and a body 53 of wood or plastic. The body 53 has spaced detent recesses 54. A protective cover 55 consisting of tubular portions or halves 56 and 57 is provided. The tubular portions 56 and 57 are identically constructed, each having spaced detent projections 58 adapted frictionally and removably to snap into and fit in the detent recesses 54.
The tubular portions 56 and 57 fit entirely over the sides 59 and 60 of the body 53 and have their lower edges opposed beneath the sides of the body.
The modification of the invention illustrated in Figs. 9 and 10 is characterized by the provision of a wire hanger 70 with a hook 71 having spaced flattened ears 72 and 73 and a body 74.
A protective cover 75 is provided. Cover 75 may be one piece or may be two tubular halves or portions 76 and 77 each with a lengthwise opening 78 and adapted frictionally and removably to fit over the hook beneath the ears and over portions of the body adjacent the hook.
In Fig. 11 the wire hanger 80 is shown with a hook 81 formed with a portion 82 bent about 90 degrees with the hook body 83 adapted to prevent the protective cover 85 from slipping up toward the hanger hook 81.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred embodiments of my invention, it is to be understood that I do not limit myself to the precise constructions herein disclosed and that various changes and modifications may be made within the scope of the invention as defined in theappended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent is:
1. A protective cover for a garment hanger having a hook and a body with spaced detent recesses, comprising a tubular portion adapted to enclose a portion of said hook, said tubular portion at one end extending at least to said body, and means to hold said portion against slippage longitudinally of the hook, said means comprising detent projections formed upon the lower end of the tubular portion and adapted removably to fit into said body spaced detent recesses.
' 2. A protective cover for a garment hanger having a hook and a body, comprising a tubular portion adapted to enclose a portion of said hook, said tubular portion at one end extending at least to said body, and means to hold said portion against slippage longitudinally of the hook, said body having spaced recesses therein, said tubular portion having intermediate its ends detent projections for engaging spaced detent recesses in the body.
3. A garment hanger having a hook and a body, said hook having spaced flattened ear portions, and a pair of tubular portions each adapted to enclose a portion of the hook below the flattened ear portion and a portion of the body, said tubular portions being of resilient rnate rial and each having a lengthwise opening with sidewall edges adapted to be spread apart to fit over a portion of the hook and body of the hanger and frictionaliy to snap on the hook and body.
4. A garment hanger having a hook and a body, said hook having spaced flattened ear portions, and a pair of tubular portions each adapted to enclose a portion of the hook below the flattened ear portion and a portion References Cited in the file of this patent UNITED STATES PATENTS 1,657,806 OBryon Jan. 31, 1928 2,348,523 Chaikin May 9, 1944 2,525,158 Van Derbeck Oct. 10, 1950 2,622,775 Sasaki Dec. 23, 1952 FOREIGN PATENTS 554,780 Great Britain July 19, 1943
